Max I find it hard to believe you have passed on. Together with your wife, Bev, you were both wonderful friends, and when I brought my new bride, Glenys to make our first home in Pridham House in 1964. Together we had many great nights watching black and white TV in your lounge. You and I would sneak out for nine holes. Remember the time we both eagled the par 5 seventh hole.! Glenys and I moved to Hawkes Bay, but you remained only a phone call away and we ofter spoke at length. The great night was when we all went to the Michael Crawford Concert in the Bowl of Brooklands on 2006. The video I made of this is now a memorial to you, Bev and Glenys. I play it often and remember those wonderful days we all enjoyed.

What a huge loss to the community, Max was an incredibly positive influence on so many lives, young men in particular through sport and education. I'll always remember the fun we had on the golf course, even more at the 19th, his beaming smile, cheeky chuckle and great sense of humour. Thanks Max for always taking an interest in our boys with cricket especially, your support for so many organisations and your wise words of encouragement in all aspects of life. A true legend, condolences to the family. RIP old mate.

Max was a welcoming and inspirational colleague when I was a novice teacher at NPBHS. His contribution to many lives was immense and it was a lifetime commitment. My sympathy goes to his family.

For Janis, Sandra, Graham, and your families, my condolences for the passing of your father and Father-in-law. You're all well aware of Max's lifetime of service to NPBHS and the community. He spent many years turning boys into young men. For many of us his association with the school, his mana and powers of persuasion meant that we were brought back to speak at events or assist with PTA ventures. Thank you for sharing him with generations of pupils. Fond memories remain. Stephen Bone.

I first knew Max when I was a youngster at Waitara Primary school in the 1950's and he was teaching Phys Ed. He played in the Waitara cricket team which my father captained. In 1962, I became a boarder at NPBHS (Pridham) and was pleasantly surprised to discover that Max was in charge of Carrington House. We kept in touch more recently on matters related to the history of the school. His contribution in this area has been immense and will is highly valued by all. Max was a thoroughly decent and caring man who gave his all to NPBHS - he will be sorely missed by all Old Boys and the school. My sincere condolences to his family. R.I.P. Max Roger Smith.

Max was a wonderful happy man who lived a life helping others. His smile was a mile wide as was his personality. Many a fun time at school and the golf course. Still not a fan of Lion Red Max! Condolences to the family. Go well Max Gary and Sheryl Bell

What a fabulous man - and what a hugely positive influence he has had over hundreds and hundreds of boys. A school is tagged by its icons - both staff and students, and without doubt Max is pretty close to the top of the list - not only for his teaching, his coaching, his involvement with archives and school history - but, on top of all of these … his wonderfully positive attitude, his smile, and the way he always took an interest in you and your family. A true legend who will be missed by so many. Sincere confidences to the wider Carroll family. RIP Max. Al and Sue Kirk

Such grand memories still, sixty years on! A quintessential contribution to this fine school community, and fond memories of him accompanying me and Lyal French-Wright on a school visit some years back. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

A wonderful man who made an impression on my life from 1960 (Housemaster, Carrington House) until my last catch up at a dinner with friends to celebrate his 90th birthday in 2022. Very privileged to have had his company.at a series of annual catchups of a diverse group of boarder and day boy Old Boys and partners over the past 10 to 15 years. Special memories, thanks Max.
