Tributes

Heartfelt condolenes to Fay and all the family in the sad passing of Barney. As a young cyclist I remember Barney winning the 1959 Tour of Central cycle race. He was a competitor that we aspired to be, both as a cyclist and a person. He gave encouragement, support and advice to many a cyclist throughout his career. Rest in peace Barney.

Barney and I met in Austria in 1998 at the Worlds Master’s Championships where he was a regular competitor and I, only at my second. Over a glass of beer after one of the races I told him of my urge to visit New Zealand. He said that it was a great idea and encouraged our first visit, followed by many more over the years. My wife and I even ended up getting a place on the South Island and convinced them to come and visit us for a week. It was their first trip to the South Island, I recall. During that trip we visited the splendid new Velodrome in Invercargill, where we encountered a coach, whose father had raced with Barney back in earlier years. During our times together, we grew to value his friendship and generosity, and deeply respect his genuine love for the sport of cycling. While I retired from racing at 60, Barney kept it up and told me that even though he stood on the podium several times at the World’s Championships his goal was to stand on the top step before he retired from racing. Of course, he finally did exactly that several years ago and though he retired from racing at that level, he kept on riding with his many friends at the local level. His dedication to cycling was evident when seeing the trophy room in their home. It is filled with all kinds of awards going back to his teenage years when he won the race around the island at age 18. We are deeply saddened over his tragic death and how his departure from this life is weighing on his family and friends, however, one thought that may have come mind is that he died doing that which he loved. Rest in peace, dear Barney, we will miss you.
