Tributes

Dear Marion, Fiona, Robyn and Sandra, We've just got back from a holiday to hear the news of peter's passing. No doubt a relief but very sad nevertheless. Peter will long be in our memories spanning over thirty years; from the good old days of the Catchment Board to the challenges of GW. Four of us in the one office - Blakie, Roger Hunter, Peter and newbie Don. Every day full of banter, practical jokes (fish pinned under the desk drawer), a bit of work but with Peter doing his best to ignore the distractions to just get on with his job. Special times at Wardell'sBridge with all the kids, silly races, Father Xmas - Roger H and his colourful jokes helped by a press-ganged fairy. Back then, in many ways Peter was the pseudo boss. He was the one who kept the Soil Con boys up to the mark and made sure they were getting the pole orders in or getting their deliveries done on time. He certainly kept me in line when I started the shelter and native seedling sales from Akura; after all it was his territory and I was the tolerated interloper. Funny though, it never stopped him from being helpful and accommodating and every so often his wry sense of humour would surface. So it is these qualities that I admired in Peter and I will certainly reflect on our time together with a fond appreciation of all he contributed to my life in Wairarapa. To you Marion and your family, our thoughts and best wishes go with you into the future. Don and Lyn Bell

Marion and family. With my Uncle Roger Hunter working as a soil con at the Catchment Board he got my brother and I a holiday job. Peter was my first boss! Cant say as a teenager I liked him much. He was a hard taskmaster. Summer pruning poplars. Stinkinking hot long grasd. Long days. Looking back he taught me a work ethic 2nd to none. Later got us involved with time keeping and clearing stages in a number of car rallys both local and national. Good times good memories and always good for a yarn when we saw each other in recent times. Kind regards.
