Prof JLR Davis was an influential legal scholar and generous teacher. As an undergraduate, his contract law book, and his torts book (with Dr Rosalie Balkin) were standard texts. As my Master’s examiner, he encouraged me to pursue a doctorate in law at ANU. I valued his perspectives, his wisdom, and his generosity as my principal supervisor. My condolences to Judy and Jim’s wider family. I was so privileged to study under him. The higher degree research I did with his guidance changed the course of my professional life.
A tribute to Professor Jim Davis. My condolences to Judy on the sad passing of Jim. Jim was an inspirational and supportive colleague during my two decades of teaching at the ANU Law School. As a new lecturer in 1974 I found Jim always approachable and happy to share his knowledge of the Law School and beyond while I was establishing my courses. He had the ability to combine this friendly and approachable demeanor with a brilliant legal mind, evidenced in his many highly regarded publications, his great success as an administrator and, in student surveys and generally, his excellence as a teacher in the Law School.
Sincere condolences to Judy, family and friends. I knew Professor Jim Davis when I worked in the Law Faculty of the ANU for 8 years in the 1990's. I found Professor Davis to be a friendly and caring person who was well regarded in the Faculty and by students. My family also enjoyed many holidays at their holiday house at Long Beach, NSW.
A generous colleague gone. So sorry. My best wishes to Judy. You will be missing Jim the most. Helen Gamble
Professor Jim Davis made a substantial contribution to Australian law. His thorough textbook on contract law, written with Professor Don Grieg, is still referred to today even though only one edition was published some 37 years ago. The textbook he wrote with Rosalie Balkin on tort law quickly became the go-to legal work on the subject for practitioners. Jim also made a significant contribution to the reform of law in Australia in relation to proportionate liability. He taught me an advanced torts course when I was an undergraduate at the Australian National University, and I got to know him then and had intermittent contact with him after I moved to Sydney. Jim was not only an excellent lecturer and academic, he was a warm, decent, humorous and humane man. I am glad I had the privilege of knowing him.
