I attended St Dominics Church with my family and Verne was also a parishoner there. Every week, I would see Verne and always had great conversations with him, talking about all things. Was always great to see him and catch up after mass in the parish centre for morning tea. My grandfather passed away when I was young so Verne was a grandfather figure that I needed in my life. Always happy to have a chat, always happy to talk about anything. I'll forever cherish my time with him. He will be missed dearly! a photo of me and Verne after mass back in 2021
I appreciate the friend that Vern has been to my Father, John White. They had been neighbours for twenty years at Pinesong, but during the pandemic lockdown they started meeting for meals and conversation as a bubble. They have carried meeting for Friday dinner, taking it in turns to cook for each other. Vern will be missed greatly, especially by John on Friday nights.
We just heard in the ceremony that Vern wanted to go to the Paris Olympics. My brother and I will be going and we will do a tribute in Vern's honour at the Athletics.
I consider myself very lucky to have spent time with Vern. I especially enjoyed our running conversations as Vern had an in depth knowledge of New Zealand middle and long distance running. He will be missed by many!!!
