Tributes

To me Tony was fun and laughter in one package. He was articulate and always curious about the natural world. His knowledge of everything marine including rare shells, I always appreciated and was in awe of. I had taught Biology for a number of years and soon realised I could learn a great deal about sea- life from Tony. Loving nature was part of his character and he enjoyed tramping with not only Katie but also would drag our son, Dale, along too. The reluctance to tramp was on the part of Dale, but Tony’s tales would lift any bad mood. Tony shared his life with us and it is with fondness, love and respect that I remember him. God bless. We have known Tony, Liz and Katie when we ended up being neighbours in 2000. Tony's wicked sense of humour soon came to the fore. I vividly remember going for a tramp up to the top of Lake Okataina to camp with Dale and with Tony and Katie. Happy indelible memories. Tony's new year games competition in the garden was something I really enjoyed along with the competitiveness. I must mention the "game" we had between us at Matakana Beach. Tony was pulling me on the biscuit behind his boat. He said that he would do a loop and then check to see if my thumb was up (go faster) or down (slower) or sideways (no change). After each loop I decided not to give any signals, it became a game. However, this was a signal for Tony to go faster each time until I had a massive wipe out. Friends ashore said I was more than 10 feet in the air. You won Tony but for me it was truely memorable. Thanks for all the advice recently regarding resource consent issues with your Aquatek hat on. Thank you for being Tony, your smile and snigger will always remain with us.

I first met Tony as a work colleague in London in 1982. His sharp sense of humour and our mutual love of loud music ensured that we would become friends. In fact, Karen and I became partners in crime with Tony and Liz over many years, going to concerts, parties and holidaying for around 10 years. The friendship even survived the arrival of children! These were great times due in no small part to Tony's love for life, cars, music and, most of all, Liz. I wish we could have gone fishing together, but you were the first person I knew to buy a Porsche and that counts for a lot!. Rest in peace mate.

Tony, my best mate from schooldays at Uppingham. We shared hours of fun, numerous adventures and the excitement of growing up together. He was always up for an escapade or two and I am sure it was always him that initiated them. Of course, I am joking as we both lead each other on very successfully! In subsequent years he remained the closest of friends, not only to me but to my family. I will value his immense integrity in everything he did, his tenacity, his effervescent character, his slightly sardonic sense of humour which I certainly share and overall, his love for his family, friends, and life. Finally, there is one ‘I was there moment’ which, along with many other fond memories will never be forgotten, the wonderful evening when he met Liz for the first time in a pub in London……the rest of course, as the saying goes, is both his life and history. Love to Liz, Katie, Angela, Nessie and the rest of the family from Geoff, Sue, Fiona and Charles Baker.
