Stephen Samuel James Harper

5 August 19529 April 2024

Stephen was a very much beloved husband, daddy, father-in-law, brother, son, granddad, uncle, friend and great uncle. Retired Sub-Postmaster and Engineer, dog and duck-whisperer, horse-dad, chicken-wrangler, fire-starter, tree-chopper, builder and fixer of everything.

Passed away suddenly in the immense beauty of Mount Tongariro.

“His golden heart, now at peace.
His tireless hands, their labors ceased.

With tearful eyes we watched and saw him pass away.
And though we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay.

And though he’s gone, his spirit prevails.
Guiding us through life’s joy and travails.

For those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day”

Tributes

Erin and the family - it has taken me a long time to find a way to send my condolences about Stephen's passing. I have been thinking about you so often since Jayne called me, to tell me. It was such a shock. Just know that I am thinking of you, and hoping you and the girls will find it easier as time goes on. Love, Betsy

It was with great shock and sadness that we the former Postmen and Woman of Dungiven Post Office Northern Ireland learned of the passing of Stephen out on a walk with his daughter, it was a blessing that she was there with him, and, what great shock to Erin and the family to hear this sad news. We offer Erin, and her 3 daughters our sincere sympathy on this sad happening and condolences to sister's Esther and Norma and their families. We Postmen and Woman got on so well with Stephen as our Postmaster and had some great craic and laughter on many occasions it was a pleasure to work with him and his family,One of the great outdoor activities we done together was the North Antrim Challenge Walk a distance of 12 miles which took place in June 1994 we raised £2000 for the Chest Heart and Stroke Association, another occasion,Stephen and myself and his daughters Alana and Elenora set of one Sunday in May 1997 on the Causeway Coast Walk of 20 miles the girls kept up with us great credit to them and Stephen was rightfully proud of them.We the Postmen and Woman of the former Dungiven Post Office keep Erin her daughters and their husbands and ,Esther and Norma in our thoughts and prayers and may God bless them and bring Stephen to the Happiness and Peace of the Kingdom of Heaven.

We were shocked and saddened to hear the news and our thoughts are with Erin, Eleanor, Alana and Aenone. I was only glad that before his passing he, with a little encouragement, was able to obtain some justice over his poor treatment by Post Office and only wish he had been given more time. Rest in peace Stephen.

We are truly saddened to hear of your sudden loss. Stephen was a very kind and gentle man and I felt very honoured to have introduced him to Japanese Malt Whisky even though he took some convincing of the concept. We are thinking of you all at this very sad time. All our love Ed, Jo, Harrison and Sebby xx

Thank you for all the wonderful memories over the years Uncle Stephen, from our childhood days in Northern Ireland, bouncing down to Downhill beach in the Land Rover, hearing you say “hello pet” to your constant quiet but unwavering support and words of wisdom. I’m going to miss you terribly, I promise to keep looking after mummy the best I can. I hope wherever you are you are enjoying a tot of whiskey and an amazing sunset!
