I first met Kerry in about 1955 when we were about 12–13-year-old. I was a pommy immigrant fresh out from the north of England, Kerry and his brother Bryce had been cajoled into meeting and introducing me to the local area etc. by the Boys Brigade movement. Kerry and Bryce made it their mission to make me into a Kiwi boy setting out many tasks and dares to help me … (I only barrack for the All Blacks does that make me a Kiwi) Teaching me kiwi slang and swear words, how to ride pushbikes downhill with no brakes. take my shoes and socks off (never been out bare foot before) and running me down the loose gravel roads to toughen me up … Our many trips and adventures over our youthful years. Catching the bus at night to Highbury to the picture theatre and walking home after because the busses stopped running at 8-30. Going to the variety of local pubs. Milford Marina. Poanamo. Mon desire at Takapuna. the Esplanade at Devonport. will never forget the motorbike trips to the Puhoi pub on the gravel roads. Taking girls to Lake Pupuke at night to see the submarine races. I Remember we all voted several times in the referendum to increase the drinking age limit from 21 to 18 years. The after-hours night trips to Wairewa hot pools, climbing over the fence to get in. The weekend trips by bus to Mt Ruapehu to go snow skiing etc. The old cars we had and repaired, with parts from Albany Wreckers. Kerry and I also did our national service about the same time. going on 2-week exercises in the bush around Rotorua. In 1966 Kerry was my best man at my wedding to Pam and a great best man he was. Over the years Pam and I moved to Australia to live but we have always made contact with Kerry and Angela when we have been in NZ. The greatest thing is after a few years in between seeing Kerry again it was true friendship when we could sit down, have a drink and virtually continue as if it was only a few days since we last met. Kerry truly was my best man and my best friend
We met Kerry when we started working at Barfoot and Thompson in Albany. We always got on and we had some good parties. I remember in particular the one at your and Angela's place on East Coast Rd. We send love and light to Angela and your children. Cheers Bayne and Janine
Kerry, you're at peace now but you will be forever missed. I remember when I first met you I thought you were a bit scary, so gruff voiced and you had a staunch presence. This quickly changed as I got to know you for the big softie you were. Your love for your family was obvious. You were their protector. Alina's boyfriends didn't stand a chance, met with a humph to their greetings except for Michael of course as I bet Kerry could tell this one was there to stay. You would make sure the spa was all set up for Alina and I. You'd shake your head at our driving mishaps..I still remember knocking the letterbox off the gate. You had a deep, belly laugh that was infectious and a wicked sense of humour. Your soft interior really came through when you first viewed Alina in her wedding dress. To this day I still remember your huge smile through the tears, how proud you were of your beautiful daughter. Kerry, you'll always be here in everyone's minds forever. Rest easy, forever loved by many XOXO
