Hi Dianna and Victoria, I’m sorry to hear of Barry’s passing. Please pass my condolences to your families and Audrey. Yours sincerely Gordon
Dear Diana and Victoria, I’m so sorry to learn of your Dad’s passing. He was a great man! I will be forever grateful for the warm hospitality of him and your Mom in November 1984 when I arrive in Wellington as a Rotary International Scholar. Their hosting me for a few days until I secured my own flat turned into a lifelong friendship. Of course, I have fond memories of your Pucua batch and the world-class trout fishing on Lake Taupo. I remember Christmas 1984 when I brought my parents to your batch. For many years they raved about your Dad’s smoked trout. Barbara and I have fond memories from when your Mom and Dad visited us in Washington, DC. And of course we treasure our visit to your family farm in 1997. Please know Barbara and I send our prayers and heartfelt condolences to you both and your Mom. Best regards, Dan Witt Washington, DC 24 May 2024
Hello, we are sending our deepest sympathies from the U.S. to Diana, Victoria and the family. We just watched the live stream and are so grateful to be able to be at the memorial service virtually and in spirit. Barry and Audrey came into our lives over 20 years ago and left a mark that we and our children will never forget. Our family had the pleasure of meeting up with them on several occasions and John had the privilege of seeing them at several more dental meetings. The time they stayed with us is our favorite memory. We are so glad they loved to travel (!) and only regret that we have never made it to New Zealand. Barry considered us part of his whanau and we were honored by that. We enjoyed their company so much and we loved learning all about New Zealand, the Big Smoke, skiing on volcanos, peacharines, All Blacks, and so much more. My children know more about New Zealand than most kids in the U.S., that is for sure!! Many tears were shed in Kansas today, we will always love Dr. Barry and Miss Audrey as our own.
Barry and I met in the late 1990s on an Internet discussion group for dentists. We met face to face when he and Audrey traveled to a conference that my wife and I were also attending. Over the years we got together at many other conferences and events here in the US (some with Audrey as well). We developed quite a friendship and, even though we were half a world apart, we corresponded frequently. We were nearly 30 years apart in age, but the connection was strong. Over the years, I practically considered him a second father. On one of their many travels, Barry and Audrey even spent several days staying at our home in Kansas. It was one of the best times of my life. Barry has had a huge impact on me, both personally and professionally. To this day I proudly wear the All Blacks cap he gave me and the cricket ball he sent me sits proudly in my office. We live in a wonderful time where a warm and loving man from New Zealand can become friends with a guy in Kansas even before they ever met face to face. I am so grateful for Barry's warmth, sense of humor, and advice. He has helped me see the world in a different way and he has taught me much about life. Once as he was leaving to head back home, I gave him a hug and said, "Goodbye Barry". He smiled and replied, "No John. See you soon!" My eyes are filled with tears, but those words ring strongly in my ears... "See you soon". Rest in the peace of Christ, my friend, we'll indeed see each again.
A fine man who will be sadly missed by family and friends. He was the centre of my sister Audreys world, andshe will be lost without him. Rest in peace Barry.
