Sooty passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday 6 September 2025, aged 70.
Much loved husband of May for 49 years. Adored father of Kev, Pammy & Chilayne. Proud Grandfather (aka Grumpy) of Charlotte, Ruby and Michael. Sooty was a loyal and dedicated firefighter (Senior Station Officer/Volunteer Support Officer) for 57 years.

He was extremely well-respected by his colleagues, served his community with pride and was the anchor of our family. He will be sorely missed.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00am, Sunday 14 September at Greenhithe Community Hall, 7 Greenhithe Road, Greenhithe, Auckland and will also be live streamed here  https://tinyurl.com/4cyu9j7s

Rest in love Mike/Dad/Grumpy/Sooty. You’re an absolute legend and hero to us all.

RIP Michael, apologies for not being able to attend your service today. As neighbors at the Birkenhead Fire Station staff houses, Nth Shore Jnr FS, always great to have your support, wisdom and to have you and your family as family. I remember coming back from a call out, in your old classic car, listening to your dad and my dad talking and joking, very memorable. Will always been remembered Michael.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Rest in Peace Mike. Regards from old netball friend Cheryl Mellor.

You may not know me but Mikes father and my father were best friends. Gerry Mairs and Gordon Barrett were firefighters together in the 60’s and our families would hang out at Masterson Bay, Leigh and of course his parents house to watch the rugby! I remember Mike as a young teen, just 2 yrs older than me, always ready with a laugh and a tease. Wishing you all, the love of friends and family and warm memories to hold on to forever.
