Tributes

Tom and Mairi have been our NZ parents for a few weeks in the early seventies, although they also raised Marion, Andrew, Graham, Roderick, Allan,  Janet, and Kere. But there were also all the young boys and girls who momentarily needed Mairi's help. Tom's and Mairi's mothers were also with us for the weekend. I remember also Noeline and « big Andrew ». We really had good times all together. Thank you Mairi for what you did for us. On July 71 my sister Christine was invited by the Sewell's for one month in Levin, and on July 72 we were both invited by my sister and me and so happy to be part of this amazing family, going to school and visiting, and enjoying all the wonders of this amazing country! On July 74, we spent a few weeks in Noumea, New Caledonia,  to visit our father who was working at the local hospital.Mairi sent a letter to my parents that they would be so happy to have my sister and me with them once again for one month. We were so happy to have this opportunity to join all our NZ school friends and all the siblings of this fabulous family.Mairi was such a loving mother ! The best mother in the world. We never broke the bond : in the early eighties Tom and Mairi visited us in Marseille, we were so happy to meet again. Mairi used to send every end of year "Christmas letter" telling us about our families.  Marion visited us also, I remember that I took her to Saint-Tropez with four inches of fresh snow in the streets ! In 2016, my daughter Anne-Carole told me that she wanted to visit New Zealand by herself. I said I was OK  just because Mairi lived in Auckland and I knew that she or one of the siblings help her. She spent her first days at Mairi's apartment before heading south to the South Island and then up to the north of North Island. Thank you Mairi for having kept an eye on her during her road trip ! For many years, Roderick and I have kept in touch. We will never break the bond. Dear Mairi, we will never forget you. We love you !

I wish to honour Mairi for her wisdom, hospitality, governance ability & pastoral support. She was a huge rock for me during my studies at BCNZ, whilst working as youth pastor initially, then on to being the sole pastor at LBC. It was a challenging environment from which to pastor, yet with Mairi's help, I was able to get through. By the grace of God, we saw growth & health, & I was able to Endure. Togethe with Tom, they were integral in helping to steer the ship in those early days. Mairi has a wonderful family, & we have been blessed to meet most of them over the years, and through until her move to Auckland. I was pleased to stay with her on study visits to Auckland, and to maintain our close relationship. Her investment into so many lives leaves a wonderful footprint on the kingdom journey for all.

I remember Mairi with love, respect and gratitude. At aged 19 I boarded with the Sewells in order to do my PA teaching assignment at Gore Primary School. It was a very significant, formative year for me. Tom and Mairi welcomed me so warmly and graciously into their home. Mairi was extremely busy juggling life as a mother (two very active toddlers), housewife and doctor. How she managed to find time for me too, I have no idea. Only 9 years my senior, she treated me like a younger sister, a special pleasure for one who was the oldest of 6 siblings. She never seemed rushed, I never felt de trop. We had some great conversations. I could wish that every insecure young 19 year old had such a wise and caring mentor as Mairi was to me that critical year. That was the start of an inspirational and loving friendship that lasted 65 years. Thankyou Mairi!

Dr Mairi became my role model when we both were newcomers to Gore and lived a few houses apart. She was an independent thinker who shared commonsense with gentle wit. Her offer to illustrate the minister's serial on Pilgrim's Progress delighted everyone when Pilgrim emerged as the minister's cartoon twin. The budding romance with Tom was balanced with loyalty to her life goals. Mairi and Tom's practical friendship continued for half a century through my parents' ministry in South-East Asia, our mission in Thailand and that of our daughter in Africa-Asia. We too, are part of her legacy of love and loyalty to the Lord.

I remember Mairi as a very caring, kind person. Very wise, a woman of much wisdom and deep faith. A friend and I recall her sermon's at the Levin Baptist Church, when she was an Elder . She preached good practical, wise advice. She was a very caring devoted doctor while she was here in Levin. It is wonderful knowing she is now with our Lord and Savior forever in eternity. At peace. Blessings to all her family at this time.

Mairi moved into Oakridge Apartments after she retired and we became friends. Her warmth towards people shone like a bright star. Mairi had never tried a cocktail and without to much persuasion she soon developed a taste for ice cream with liquor and she was always keen for a vino at five o'clock. Mairi was a great listener and shared many words of wisdom, both spiritual and common sense. You could rely on her for great advice. Her cat Jemima was the love of her life during her time at Oakridge and we missed them both when they moved to Logan Campbell. RIP my old friend.
