Don was my father’s business partner for many years, so I was barely a teenager when I first met him. He referred to my mother as ‘Mrs Muppet’, he had a sense of humour! He drove me to school in his DKW car and tooted the horn to embarrass me, saying it was stuck! He wrote me a reference for my application to teacher’s training college, saying he had to confirm the meaning of ‘supercilious’ before he submitted it.
