In loving memory of Ramana Chandar

Ramana Chandar died peacefully on July 6, 2024, aged 82.  Ramana passed away while surrounded by family and holding the hand of his beloved wife Colleen. Born on October 3, 1941, in Lautoka, Fiji, Ramana made the life changing decision to relocate to New Zealand in 1966. Ramana and Colleen met in 1970 and remained married for 54 years.

Ramana was a respected businessman and an active participant in his community, where his contributions were invaluable. Undertaking roles such as a founding member and president of the Waikato Fiji Association, and involvement with the Ramayan Sanstha Waikato Incorporated. He earned the respect of many for his unwavering dedication and hard work. His leadership within the community was exemplary, and his wisdom frequently sought by those who knew him.

Ramana was a talented country and western singer, and musician, who learned to play many instruments throughout his life; and was often called upon to perform music and sing at various cultural and community events. He read extensively and possessed a profound interest in exploring new philosophies and ideas, igniting engaging discussions with those around him.

Ramana was a devoted husband to Colleen Ann Chandar, and beloved father to his daughters: Shirley Angela, Kristene June, Ann Marie, Reena Roslyn, and Kama Chandra, as well as his only son, Sathya Lalaya. He was a loving grandfather to his only grandson, Caleb, and his granddaughters, Leyla and Sara Ann; and a dearly loved father figure to his son-in-law, Paul Scutts.

A celebration of Ramana's life and cremation was held on July 10, 2024 in Hamilton New Zealand and live streamed internationally to relatives and friends.

The legacy of Ramana Chandar, characterized by love, wisdom, and a spirit of community, will endure in the hearts of his family and friends.  He will be remembered not only for his achievements but more so for the love, warmth and joy he shared with those around him.  Ramana walked a path of devotion, knowledge, service, and meditation; he will be profoundly missed, and remembered for generations to come.
