Bereavement Panui on behalf of the Karaka whanau regarding the passing of their beloved, Dion Andrew Karaka, who sadly passed away on Sunday, 28th July 2024 in Auckland. Dion is currently in our care and will remain with us until the service on Monday, 5th August 2024. Whanau have advised that the funeral service will take place here at Haven Falls ki Auckland, 3 View Road, Henderson, commencing at 11am. Followed by a private cremation at 2:30pm.
With heavy hearts and great sadness, we share that Dion Karaka passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on 28 July 2024.
Dion was Auckland Diving’s unofficial ambassador. Dion was a fixture at Glenfield pool on the weekends where he would encourage kids (and adults!) to give diving a go. His great love of diving encouraged countless others to try the sport and fall in love with it too. Dion attended the Masters’ classes at Westwave pool where he would polish his impressive dives and compete (and usually win!). Dion continually encouraged his fellow divers and egged us all on to try the scary dives because he just knew we “could do it!”.
Dion’s generosity, kindness, and enormous heart will be dearly missed. Dion took the time and effort to regularly bring home-baked treats and lollies to the pool to share – banana bread, pineapple lumps and milk bottles were pool favorites!
The diving pool was Dion’s source of joy. And Dion’s joy and laughter and giggle were infectious. You could not be grumpy or sad around Dion for long. He had a beautiful way of lifting the spirits of all around him - we all simply felt better after spending an hour with Dion.
Dion is survived by his life partner of 34 years, his whānau and so very many people who loved him dearly.
Right now, we as a diving community are embracing Dion’s partner and whānau in aroha and keeping them in our thoughts as we all come to terms with this enormous loss.
