Tributes

Garth’s colleagues at Australian sister association Accord are deeply saddened at Garth’s passing and offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends and NZ industry colleagues. During the many years we worked with Garth on numerous industry issues we considered ourselves blessed to have his good-humoured and expert counsel to help guide us. Always ready and willing to offer a helping hand, Garth navigated issues for Cosmetics New Zealand in his characteristically unflappable manner. He was a valued colleague and friend, and will be sorely missed. Vale Garth. Bronwyn, Craig, Catherine, Jen, Erly, Steph, Rianna, Paul and Ella.

It is with great sadness we said goodbye to a gentleman, font of knowledge and huge contributor to the Cosmetics NZ Industry Association over nearly 30 years. Garth was delightful to work with, always positive, calm and knew "a lot of stuff" about a lot of topics. Most of the cosmetics legislation in New Zealand, Garth had developed and written, starting as far back as the 80s, so it was second nature to him when the queries arose. His Technical Regulatory updates were always well attended, and covered international updates sometimes with obscure inclusions but always insightful. We were entertained each time at his mashing of chemical names. As GM, I thoroughly enjoyed working with Garth and looked forward to our weekly work in progress meetings, for the humour, insights and guidance. He surreptitiously handed over much knowledge and responsibility for IAC, ISO and government submissions over the last year to ensure the association would be well poised for the future. Garth was a font of knowledge at the Association, helping it develop and evolve, over a lot of its 50 year history. Penny Thompson – Estee Lauder has said in tribute: “Garth took the board to the next level, made us understand our responsibilities and gave us recognition with the other professional associations. He also introduced us to regulations! Thank you, Garth, it was always a pleasure to work with you”. We know this loss will be deeply felt by all who knew and worked with Garth in New Zealand and internationally. Our thoughts are with Garth’s son Daniel and his family.

On behalf of myself, Plastics New Zealand, and our working groups, we are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Garth. He was an integral part of our EPS Product Stewardship Working Group to which he offered his knowledge, kindness, and dedication. Garth’s contributions to designing product stewardship within New Zealand have been immense. His expertise and thoughtful approach were deeply appreciated by all who had the privilege of working alongside him. We are truly honoured to have had the opportunity to collaborate with him and benefit from his insights. His loss is felt deeply and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

With Deep Sympathy It was with much sadness that we heard the news of Garth’s untimely passing. It was always a pleasure to meet and work with Garth. A gentle man, with a great warmth of character and a deep passion for the industry. CTPA benefitted from his advice and expertise. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. Our thoughts and condolences are with Garth’s family, friends and colleagues at this most difficult time. CTPA, the UK Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association

Just yesterday, we attended WFDSA meetings in person and via Zoom, and we saw Garth actively participating with his significant contributions. Garth's contribution to the industry he represented in his country, New Zealand, which he also did through the Federation, was substantial and relevant. We owe him much for strengthening this global channel. I remember today, when at some meeting, Garth, always very responsible with his commitments, connected to Zoom at 3:00 a.m., leaving aside his rest to participate in one of the Federation meetings since the world time zone only gave us that option. Thank you, dear Garth, on behalf of the Direct Selling Associations of Latin America, for being a solid pillar that has kept the industry strong. Also, thank you for being that cheerful, fun, positive, and always optimistic friend. Seeing your photos on Facebook always taught us a great lesson: knowing how to live fully and enjoy every moment, no matter how simple, with the passion of someone who values life in its maximum expression. Garth knew how to make something simple and ordinary into something extraordinary. Thank you, Garth, through your son Daniel, whom we knew as a wonderful child and your companion in adventures and travels, for so many lessons learned throughout your life. To Daniel, you have a great example, reference, mirror to reflect on yourself, and a reason for immense pride, your father Garth. You can always count on us! Goodbye Garth, now you fly free, without burdens, pain, or sorrow, and your soul flows in a space full of blessings and immense joy. I met Garth intermittently before joining Australia’s direct selling industry almost two decades ago. Our backgrounds and personalities formed one of my cherished work relationships. Garth was a consummate professional. From his multi-sector exposure I saw, and leveraged, his exceptional grasp of the opportunities and threats from New Zealand’s economic and regulatory ambition. He had a keen sense of its environmental and societal challenges. He had the gift of seeing this through different lenses. At times we had our differences, but nothing that touched our mutual respect and close mateship. I can identify with the personal attributes described elsewhere. I’m deeply saddened for his family, particularly Daniel who Garth unashamedly adored. Theirs was an extraordinary father and son bond, and I’m sure this with the love of his close family will sustain his future. Vale, my friend.

Sending much arhoa to my Wyllie cousins at this sad time. I remeber Garths warm and happy smile, such a kind soul who always put him family first. He was another older brother who helped guide us through our younger years. Much luv Carol and Simon xxx

Part 2 Garth was a driven man & passionate for what he believed in. The DSA of NZ was obviously an organisation Garth epitomised & maintained special values for & why his friends and colleagues trusted & respected him. He was very passionate about the Direct Selling community & his role as Executive Director serving it with integrity & hard work. This is evidenced by the large number of roles he maintained within the Direct Selling Industry not only in NZ, but was admired for his contribution to the DSA in Australia and internationally through his many contributions to the work of The World Federation of DSA for which Garth was recently recognised & honoured, at the World Federation of Direct Selling (WFDSA) World Congress in Dubai. He will also be inducted into the New Zealand DSA - Hall of Fame in November of this year. Garth was a very kind generous & hospitable man, a leader with deep human qualities, with an innate ability to help people to perform & develop, because he exhibited great strength & could inspire belief in others. Garth was able to make tough decisions when required, but most importantly as a leader concentrated on enabling his team to thrive, which is a 'serving' role, not the dominant 'leading' role commonly associated with leadership. It has been a privilege to have known the dedicated & passionate man Garth Wyllie. Each of us has special memories of Garth. In this moment, let us shed our tears; let us be thankful that we were blessed & fortunate to have been given the opportunity to have known a man named Garth Wyllie a very special individual who lived and embraced life with a passion. I will forever remember Garth the sprightly gentle man with a kind, warm smile, who demonstrated hospitality beyond the call of duty which we all know was his mainstay & trademark as a unique personality, our truly dynamic & exceptional friend. We have all been privileged to have known and been inspired by Garth. His legacy will never be forgotten.

Part 1 Dear Wyllie family, friends, and colleagues. At this time let us remember our very special Garth. Every moment we shared with Garth was a joy because he was a good man and an inspiration; he was also a great man. Garth was a dedicated family man who loved his precious wife Helen, his very special son Daniel, his parents Carl and Jean, brother Stuart, sisters Rosemary, Eunice, Faith, Gloria, Ingrid, Edythe, and their families. Our prayers are with the family during this time. I have been very fortunate to have known Garth for almost 30 years being involved with the Direct Selling Association of New Zealand and the Natural Health Alliance where we were both concerned with what is best for all New Zealand businesses and consumers, and what best serves government or corporate agendas was of no interest to us. Along the way we made several strides to de-rail the joint trans-Tasman Therapeutic Products Agency with Australia which would have effectively been the Australian TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) system extending its domain to cover New Zealand, and more recently the excellent news of the repeal of the Therapeutics Products Act introduced into New Zealand parliament in July 2023, which would have installed a level of bureaucracy unprecedented and unwarranted for regulation of natural health products. Garth was always at hand with his extensive background and knowledge of government regulatory affairs and made it his business to seek out and know what was coming down the regulatory pipeline, Garth always maintained that regulation must be proportionate to risk. Garth was a loyal trusted friend and colleague. His wonderful experience and background knowledge was exceptional, with a tenacity to get things done. His generosity of spirit, intellect and effort were hidden under a legendary sense of humour a hearty chuckle a self-confident demeanour along with the constant flow of interesting information immense energy, and love of life.

Patrick Fahy

You have always been my rock my tower of strength always there when I needed. We have missed out on catch-ups over the last few years for one reason or another with Covid restrictions and cost of travel have kept us apart and then this year was the planned family trip to NZ but the timing didn’t go in our favour and your journey ended way too soon. I only have your memories now and forever but always in my heart. Rest in peace my brother you have left us with a void that can never be filled. It was with great sadness that I heard from Garth's sister, Gloria, of his passing. Having had the pleasure of working alongside Garth for 27 years in the CTFA (Cosmetics New Zealand) I got to know him very well. It was a mark of the man that in all those years we never had a difference of opinion. We enjoyed each others company on many trips both within New Zealand and across the Tasman. Garth was a great asset to the cosmetic industry and the International Standards Organisation. He will be sorely missed both as a colleague and a friend. To Daniel and the family our sincere condolences. John and Sharon Banks

I’m incredibly saddened to hear of Garth’s passing. Garth has been such a significant and prevailing force for good at the CTFA and now Cosmetics NZ for so many years. Garth’s consummate professionalism, steadfastness, knowledge, influence and experience will be missed enormously! He has always been a wonderfully reliable, dependable and collaborative colleague. Constantly cool, capable and confident, even under pressure. He is already greatly missed! My sincere condolences to his much loved son, Daniel, his siblings and extended family and friends.

I am so proud of my brother, everything he achieved & how he achieved it. Picking up the pieces after Helen died & taking on the role of solo dad while keeping his career & building & developing it over the years. Garth has made so many friends & has so much respect & love shown it is overwhelming. I was always there to support you & in times of need you supported me in return. I will miss you immensely & miss our regular chats & laughs over a wine or two. Love you big brother we will look after Daniel as we always have from Gloria

Auckland Airport thanks Garth Wylie for his involvement in the Aircraft Noice Community Consultation Group (ANCCG) and sends our sincere condolences to Garth's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Garth was appointed as the industry representative on the ANCCG in September 2021 and his contribution provided a critical link between the concerns of residents regarding aircraft noise and the needs of wider logistics industry. Garth had an exceptional talent of representing industry views while at the same time having good connections to and understanding of the communities around the Airport. We will dearly miss your input.

Through these years with EMA, I have always loved the conversations that I had with Garth - the passion and sincerity that radiates in the work that he does and the information that he shares is the hallmark of a man with very high work ethic and integrity. This I can see is reflected in everyone's words. Daniel, we have not met, but time and again, your reference has featured in those conversations and keeping you and rest of the family in our prayers. May Almighty's grace help you through this tough time. Garth, Thank you, for the pearls of wisdom you cared to share and those moments where your humor would lighten it up. Till we meet again, rest in peace.

Anil Kunjunny

We extend our deepest sympathy to Daniel and to Garth’s family for their sad loss. Garth was a highly valued EMA colleague who we will miss for his business expertise, kindness and humour. His career with EMA spanned nearly 30 years of dedicated service, very frequent late night business calls and travels, always with enthusiasm. His was a life well lived. We are saddened by his passing. Rest in peace, Garth. From all at the Employers & Manufacturers Association

Dear Daniel I was disappointed, as were so many others, to hear last Monday just before the opening of our Annual Convention, that your dad was not well enough to travel to Sydney this year and would not be with us for Conference. He was very much missed - and now with the news of his passing, will continue to be. Your Dad has been a great leader for the Direct Selling Industry in your homeland of New Zealand and is much appreciated and admired for his contribution to the Industry in Australia and Internationally through his many contributions to the work of 'The World Federation of Direct Selling Associations’ for which I understand he was recently recognised and honoured, at the WFDSA World Congress in Dubai. Garth spared no effort in helping to progress, and where necessary, protect the Global Industry that continues to provide so much for so many. Daniel, you can be very proud of having a dad who was very much respected and appreciated by the Leaders within the Industry he chose to work with, through many decades. Having lost your Mum so many years ago and now your dad at such a comparatively young age, may I express my deepest sympathy to you and to your dad’s siblings and their families. He is - and will continue to be a loss to all who knew and loved him. I feel very sure he would have been an important part of many lives. My deepest Condolences and warmest wishes go with this note to the entire extended Wyllie family - and to you Daniel a very special hug. As the mother of 2 sons and 2 daughters and 13 grandchildren aged between 25 and 17 my heart goes out to you. I cannot begin to imagine what you are going through. With every best wish for your future success and happiness. Imelda

From NZ Metal Roofing Manufacturers for which organisation Garth was EMA secretary over nearly 10 years. NZMRM thanks Garth Wylie for nearly ten years of secretarial direction and managing our meetings and correspondence and for years before that providing technical advice. We will miss his sense of humour and ability to contribute his own great experience into running our business. Thank you, Garth for all your help, and welcome presence at our social occasions and conferences. Hard act to follow. Our condolences to his family and in particular to his son, who we know was very close to Garth. Stuart Hayman for NZMRM

Garth was so helpful to me when I started in my new role at Direct Selling Australia nearly two years ago. Having not been in an 'Association" role before I leaned on Garth for guidance and advice and he was extremely generous with his support and wise council. His knowledge of our industry will be missed, as will Garth, who always had time to help others and unselfishly gave his support to anyone who called out to him. Sending hugs to all his family, and apologies I am unable to attend his memorial service tomorrow.

Geoff Mulham

Garth, a devoted and highly regarded ISO community expert, earned the respect and appreciation of all. We will greatly miss his expertise and warm personality. It would be sent our heartfelt condolences to Garth's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. I feel deeply saddened by this loss.

Elham Ghasemi

So sad news! My heartfelt condolences go out to Garth´s family and loved ones during this difficult time. I am sure, Garth will be greatly missed by many people in the word, and his legacy will continue to inspire us in ISO. We were fortunate to get to know and have interactions with Garth during many years inside ISO. Rest in peace our friend!

Sérgio Luiz de Oliveira

There are several people who were rather ‘institutions’ in what was the CTFA in the 90s and 00s, many of us probably hanging around longer than we should have, including myself. That was maybe because the mutual respect and generally competitive but also ethical way business was then done across the industry, made people want to stay and continue to be part of it. However, unlike the rest of us, one person who never even hinted at getting near their ‘best before’ date, was Garth Wylie. His commitment, dedication, knowledge, expertise and patience with the rest of us, was off the scale. Garth made everyone else in the industry's life so much easier by ‘knowing all the answers’ to any question we had, and by ‘doing so much behind the scenes’ that never even became apparent in many cases as it was completed with no fuss, fanfare or drama. If there were ever a ‘rock’ for the Cosmetic Industry, over so many years, it was Garth. Whilst the rest of us stove for perfection in our work, Garth regularly achieved it. As a person, Garth was someone who never wanted the limelight. He regularly gave credit to others for his great work. Garth was always kind, generous, reliable and totally ethical. The Cosmetics industry lost a great asset when he left it. For those of us that worked with him for many years, we were lucky enough to know him as a great friend and one of those ‘really nice guys’ in every sense. Thanks Garth- you make the World a better place! Frances Stead ex-CEO of L’Oreal NZ.

Garth was not only a valued colleague but also a dear friend to many of us. Garth contributed significantly to our shared goals and vision, always working with a spirit of collaboration and friendship. We send our heartfelt condolences to Garth's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Will miss him.
