WOOD, James Douglas, (Doug). Peacefully after a short illness, Doug’s final race was run, at Ascot Bupa on Friday 11 October 2024 in his 91st year. Loved husband of Margaret for the past 67 years. Amazing and loving Dad to Janeen, Alistair, Grant, Murray, and Katrina. Loved father-in-law of David, Simone, Lorraine, Sharron, and Paul. The best Grandad of James, Ben, Nick, David, Dylan, Harvey, Matthew, Campbell, Lachlan, Gregor, Christina, and their partners. Loved great Grandad of Zadie, Emerson, Jimmy, Blake, and Claire. Only son of the late Elles and the late Annie Wood.
A big thank you to the Ascot Bupa staff for their amazing care of Dad at such short notice
As to Doug’s wishes a private farewell and Cremation has taken place. Messages to “Wood Family” PO Box 632, Invercargill or you can go to Doug’s tribute page at: mwfunerals.co.nz/s/doug
To Margaret and family go my deepest sympathy. Doug was very much one of the mainstays of the club's senior team when I joined and was a role model for myself and others of my era. The dedication and mental fortitude he displayed while still maintaining a great sense of humor and deep down love and enjoyment for the sport were things that stood out to me. That is if you can call racing for 100kms and sometimes more, enjoyable. That bit was a bit hard to get the head around back then. So I have wonderful memories of Doug as I am sure you all do as well and hope they help to keep you strong in the times ahead. A great race, well run. Rest easy now Doug.
