Our amazing mum, Beryl Elaine Borthwick, went to join Dad on the 10th of October.
Beryl was the cherished mother of Jan, Sue, and Brett and the mother-in-law of Dave, Ann, and Scott. Mum did everything for the family, which meant she became an adept rally driver travelling to Mt Ruapehu, first mate and fish-gutter when we went sailing, hockey goalie, and horse-groomer (collecting the manure for her garden), tramper, secretary, and cook.
She then got to do all this again as a loving nana to Casey, Stanton and Mitch - skiing to age 85 and cycling on the road…then at home by exercycle … and then by pedal cycle in her last months in the rest home!
She has left a huge hole in our hearts but left us many, many happy memories and a family that will laugh our way through sadness.
As per Mum’s wishes, the family had a small private celebration at her home. We would love for you to share your story about Mum here. Any donations gratefully received by the Harbour Hospice. Thanks to all the excellent staff at Aria Gardens.
Miss ya mum xxx.

We are so sorry to hear that Aunty Beryl has passed away. She has always been an inspiration with her active lifestyle and organizing abilities. We often used to see her out biking or walking in the East Coast Bays and also in Glenfield. Phil remembers great ski trips with her and I remember her organizing group bookings for shows. She was a great support when Mum was in care and offered advice. We have often had phone calls from Aunty Beryl over recent years when she had information about the family or sometimes just to chat. We will miss Aunty Beryl being in our lives. Judith and Phil
We're very sad to hear Beryl has passed away. What a great loss, our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all the Borthwick whanau. What a legend Beryl was at TSC.....so much time given to organising things, serving on the committee, and creating all those fun times. Our family has always had great admiration for all her energy and achievements and truly enjoyed all our interaction & fun times with her. I'll never forget our sauna and roll in the glorious fresh snow outside the downstairs door.....naked of course (Jane...not Grant!) We also very much appreciated the support Beryl gave to Special Olympics. It was a joy to have her along on "Snowcamp" with our athletes with disabilities, as a volunteer ski coach, several times. Our love and thoughts....Jane, Grant, Maddy , Tess & Lottie Haskell
Beryl the Peril, My Dad always called her, she lived life to the max and was a wonderful aunt to us as kids when visiting Glenfield, it was always a fun day. The last time I saw her was so long ago, but thanks to Social media, we still saw what she could get up to, and didn't she leave us in her tracks. I hope that she & John, Dad, Grandma, Joyce and all the family get to have a Borthwick's reunion now that she's there to organise them all. To Jan, Sue, Brett and all your family, she will be sadly missed, Condolences to you all. Marty
Ode to Beryl We first met you Beryl on the Glenfield track The first neighbour we knew and we ve never looked back. We then met the rest of the Borthwick tribe And knew we were going to have such a good vibe. Weekends at the ski club were such good fun Skiing round the mountain in the sun Evenings when we’d have a drink or two And someone was snoring what a hullabaloo! Celebrating your birthdays on the slopes Fine weather was always high on our hopes. We moved down south with much ado And bought2 piggies and named one after you ! A trip to the theatre to see The Lion. King, And lemons to Waiheke you would bring . Family meant everything- that is for sure. We’ll miss you Beryl need I say more .
My thoughts and deepiest condolences to the family. This is a huge loss for all of us and Beryl would be missed deeply. She was an amazing, beautifull lady with a great sence of humor. Beryl approached me at the gym several years ago at the age of 77. She was wondering if i can help her to be stronger because she wanted to continue skiing. This is how our friendship started. It was a pleasure to train Beryl, she was always greeting people with a smile and a warm words, always ready to give an advice or words of support. What an amazing women she was! Our last session was at the beginning of June, 2024. Yes, she was going to gym at the age of 86! Such an inspiration for all of us! My beautifull Beryl, I miss you so much! You will be always in my heart. Love you, Olga 🩷🩷🩷
Our condolences to Jan, Sue, Brett and your families. Auntie Beryl, Thank you for always encouraging our family to join you at the ski lodge. You were great at making sure our kids knew their responsibilities but also made sure there were some fun activities too. Mum loved the walks and trips you did together, especially as you were great fun and good at organising everything. We will miss your smile and cheerful nature.
Thanks for all the happy sking holidays with you Beryl. Your example of fitness and positivity and love of the great out doors will always be an inspiration to me. Dawn Pace. Ex Alpine Sports Club & Taupo Ski Club
Reminiscing happy times of so many family occasions when we were young. You were my bridesmaid all those years ago. My love goes out to Brett, Susan, Jan and family. Sorry I can’t be there to say goodbye. I’ll miss our telephone chats. Love Rachel and the Western family.
Auntie Beryl Thanks for the many ski trips to Ruapehu staying at Takapuna Ski Lodge. You have given me so many great memories and a passion for skiing that I just can’t stop! You were a legend in the outdoors environment and were my mum’s co-pilot on so many tramps and trips. We will remember you with great fondness. Trevor, Lynetta and family
My name is Sheila Tod, hello to Beryl’s family. I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of Beryl’s passing. I first met Beryl in 1996 when I joined the staff at 3M, and after our work life was over we remained friends in our retirements. Beryl was assigned to be my go-to person for information regarding my new job. Little did she know that she would be my go-to for about the next 13 years or so until 3M moved from Archers Road in Glenfield to Apollo drive in 2009 and Beryl retired, but by then I think I had the hang of it! She organized the children’s Xmas parties and the Social Club, actually Beryl was everyone’s go-to at 3M! Her mission was to make sure everything was running up to speed and everyone so appreciated her. Even when I retired a year later and moved to the BOP that didn’t stop us from catching up. In 2015 we went to the USA and Canada on a hiking holiday and in 2020 we did a tour to the Molesworth Station. Whenever we caught up in Auckland it was out walking the beach or Cornwall Park or the Manurewa Gardens. She was all about being outside in the fresh air and generally in some sort of gardens. Beryl was a ‘larger than life’ character, admired by all who knew her. A truly beautiful friend for nearly 30 years. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family. When you lose someone you love, you gain an angel you know." —Unknown.
