Tributes

My Uncle was a pretty special guy and I have always had a deep affection for him. My favourite memory is from a long time ago when I was perhaps 4 or 5 and Uncle Pete would come to visit us in Tamworth. He would entertain us children by pretending to be a horse galloping round the loungeroom on all fours giving us horse rides. There was always lots of fun and laughter when he was around. I will miss you Uncle Pete.

In the few years as neighbours we so enjoyed our regular chats and seeing your happy smile as you walked Eddy down the road. Rest easy Peter, Tim & Kayla

An amazing example of a true gentleman. His warm smile & enthusiastic greetings live on in Chris. I will treasure dancing at weddings with Peter as he led me around with great gusto. Visits to the farm are fondly thought of as he pottered around and always ensured you didn’t leave empty handed. A vegetable, a piece of wood, a flower. In later years, the traffic directing upon exiting the driveway was super cute. A wonderful example of a brilliant Dad & Grandad. My thoughts are with his lovely family at this difficult time.

Pete was a guy with a big heart and lots of enthusiasm. He always encouraged me and was always up for a chat. When I started studying marketing at uni, he started to mail me his marketing magazines. I didn’t ask him, he just did it. It really helped me get my head around marketing. That’s the sort of thoughtful man he was. I’ll always remember him for those things.

A sweet and kind man, a wonderful father and grandfather who will live on in the hearts and memories of his family.

I’ll always remember Peter’s genuine, warm and joyful greetings on arriving at Young Access, whether it had been months or years! From being a teenager stealing from his excellent wine cellar to seeing the caring, loving grandfather he became, my enduring memory is of his kindness to friends and absolute dedication to his beloved children and grandchildren (and the horses!)

We, Joe and Margie Maher, lived for some 11years at Youngs Access, just up the road from Peter, and then for three years in Orewa. Over that time we got to know Peter initially from helping with Robyn’s pony club events. He was a BBQ maestro and as always beavering away putting up jumps or taking them down. As our friendship grew, we spent a lot of time with Peter – watching rugby, sharing a beer or two, a bottle of wine, or coffee on cold winter evenings. He was invariably great company and generous and helpful. When we went away to horse events in other parts of the country, he would come and look after our dog Tex who was NOT allowed on the furniture or the bed – unless Peter was there. On one occasion Tex rather thought he’d like the whole bed, so growled at Peter trying to share his bed – so Peter slept on the floor. After that Sally had to look after Tex! Rest in peace, Peter – a thoroughly good bloke and friend.

Peter was such a lovely man I only had the pleasure of knowing him for a short time but enjoyed sitting with him listening to his reminiscences talking about his life. It was an honour to have had that opportunity which was given to me by his daughter who always cared and looked out for him making sure he was safe. He was a kind and gentle soul with a lovely smile that reached his eyes. He loved his family who were very important to him. He’ll be greatly missed.
