Associate Professor Doctor Malcolm Erskine Legget

19 May 19621 November 2024

Malcolm passed away on November 1, 2024,  surrounded by his loving family and best friends. His loss is keenly felt by all who knew him.

A funeral service and celebration of Malcolm’s life will be held at Holy Trinity Cathedral,  446 Parnell Road, on Tuesday November 12th at 10am. A wake will follow from 1.30pm - 3.30pm at the Northern Club, 19 Princes Street for family and friends to gather, share memories, and support each other after the service.

Please RSVP to annat@anthem.co.nz if you’d like to come along to the reception at the Northern Club.

The family would love you to dress as if you were going out for a celebration with Malcolm, and they'd love you to wear some crazy socks (as Malcolm had a penchant for them!). Business casual is fine for the Northern Club.

Malcolm was heavily involved with Neuroendocrine Cancer New Zealand (NCNZ) and had succeeded in bringing scanning and treatment not available here and from which he had benefited into the public system. In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to NCNZ Marathons for Malcolm through this link: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/marathons-for-malcolm.

His son Harry ran the Auckland Marathon on Sunday November 3rd and his daughter Emelia is running the Queenstown Marathon on November 16th. Malcolm was so proud of them wanting to raise money for a charity close to his heart.

Malcolm had an extraordinary ability to inspire others with his vision and entrepreneurial spirit. Examples include his vision for the Heart Group to be a centre of excellence, his excitement about the genetics revolution which lead to the MENZACS study, and his belief that other New Zealanders should benefit from advances in neuro-endocrine cancer treatment. His intelligence, interest in people and thoughtful approach were greatly appreciated by patients and colleagues. His enjoyment of life and resilience over many years while living with uncertainty, and the warmth and love of his special family were also inspirations. I was privileged that Malcolm was my colleague and friend. Ralph Stewart

Malcolm was an incredibly special person and meant a huge amount to all our team here at Hobson Leavy, the business co-founded by his wife Carrie Hobson. Over the years we all stood in awe of his courage as he had so many treatments, including some at the very cutting edge, and always managed to bounce back to full health. Along the way he has raised literally millions of dollars for charities to fight cancer, fund research and treatments. He leaves a tremendous legacy including the Unicorn Foundation, the charity he started, as well as 3 wonderful children and a very brave wife. He was also undoubtedly Hobson Leavy’s biggest fan and cheerleader and our Christmas parties will not be the same without him! May the road rise up to meet you our friend. The Hobson Leavy team

Malcolm was a highly respected member of the Heart Foundation Board of Directors and made a huge contribution to the Heart Foundation and to the wider heart health community. He initiated a number of fundraising activities, including the Great Ride for Heart in 2010, riding the length of New Zealand to fundraise for the Heart Foundation Chair in Heart Health that was established at the University of Auckland, as a hub for cardiology research. He was committed to investing funds in research to accelerate progress in heart health and during his career he had been involved in a number of advances in cardiology in New Zealand himself. His humour, intelligence, insight and thoughtfulness will be missed by all of us. Sincere condolences to his family. From Mike Tomlinson (Chairman), Clive Nelson (Chief Executive), and the Board and staff at the Heart Foundation.

Malcolm was truly one of a kind. He was dedicated to his profession, family and friends. Everyone that knew him loved him. He was kind, gentle, devoted and always lit up a room with his gorgeous smile. Even though I had not seen him a lot in the last several years he always along with his beautiful wife Carrie remained a close friend. Carrie my heart breaks for you and your family. No doubt you will give him a great send off and I’m so sorry I can’t be there to say my farewell. Big hugs and lots of love always Rach xxx
