Tributes

Miles, it was such a privilege to connect with you in these last few months. I so valued the conversations we had on all things spirituality, theology, the arts, and social change. You were—and are—a kindred spirit. I’ll be thinking of you next time I’m out on a trail amongst the Blue Mountains. Rest in Peace, mate.

We are so sad that you have gone and have very happy memories of the lovely weekend you spent here two Summers ago with your Dad and of happy times in Ipswich with all the family when you were little. You were a lovely, kind, intelligent and thoughtful young man and will be so sadly missed by everyone. With so much love to you and all your family xx All the P-Ws

We are looking down towards an empty wicker chair at the far end of our kitchen here in Cambridge. It is a sunny morning, and our memories are full of a vibrant, intelligent, lovely, complex young man sitting in that chair reading, talking, laughing, and discussing world politics. We remember our first, on-line, encounters with Miles in 2018, as he planned the next steps after a stellar career in NZ Government Service (capped by his work in the Prime Minister’s Office on National Security Policy). He came across as bright and engaging and he proved to be that - and so much more - when we got to know him in England. Dear Miles – Rest in Peace. Louisa and Tristram Riley-Smith

I feel so privileged to have met Miles in Melbourne just a few months ago, who I found to be a fellow traveler and someone who shared so many interests and done serious and great thinking on ethical work, art, religion, theology, and our relationships with nature. I haven’t met many who had read so many of the same books as me! The few times we met for a yarn over a drink were lovely and so natural in spite of only having met this year. It was clear that Miles had a great sensitivity to the world and lovely spirit of care. Rest in Peace - with heartfelt condolences to all his friends and family, which the time and space, given his very international last few years, make this loss even more difficult to navigate.

We all have lovely memories of Miles sitting round the dinner table laughing, going to the pub in London and spending Christmas Eve together drinking margaritas. Miles fitted in perfectly on a big family holiday to the highlands of Scotland, playing games, swimming in lochs and climbing munros - Miles was up for every adventure, despite any weather! Great memories of us climbing Foinaven.

Dear Miles, I was so so sad to hear this news. We worked together for a few months in London over 2022/2023 when I was fairly new at the company and I remember being so impressed by your kindness and empathy towards others. I was still finding my footing on my third project at the company, and you patiently guided me and reassured me when I doubted myself or needed help. You spoke so fondly of your home country, New Zealand. When I told you I was planning a trip there, you sat me down with a map of New Zealand and pointed out all the places you thought we should visit - pretty much all of which made it into our itinerary. I remember being in Dunedin earlier this year and thinking back to all of the funny university stories you had told me from your time there. I will remember your kindness, patience, and the way you made others feel supported and valued. My heartfelt condolences to all of your family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. xx

Dear Miles, It’s a tough reality to face knowing you’re no longer with us. More and more memories and times we spent together keep flooding into my mind and it hurts each time to know that you are gone. I’ll cherish getting to know you in Year 9 and becoming good friends as we ventured through Otumoetai College (many hilarious days spent in Year 13 English with Mr Shefferd) and University of Otago together - one of a small group from Otumoetai that year to call Dunedin home. Whether we were both studying or back home in Tauranga you were always up to hang out and man, your music tastes are still a big influence on me to this day. Those influences will last my life and I’ll carry your memory along with me whenever I’m lost in the sounds. I’ll miss you Miles. Big, big Love, forever from your brother. xx

Miles, you were always there for me mate - always. You had a gift for seeing the best in people and bringing it out of them, with a depth of empathy, kindness, and thoughtfulness that’s rare. Knowing you has left an indelible mark on my life and the world is so much less bright without you. I find comfort in the memories we shared, the fishing trip to Scotland, the rugby shenanigans (you were the humblest All Blacks fan that ever walked this earth), and most of all, our unforgettable time as LBS Sundowners Chiefs. Those moments will always hold a special place in my heart. I can still hear us joking about reenrolling in our 40s or 50s as Sloans or PhDs, ready to relive it all and make LBS history as back-to-back chiefs who simply refused to let the good times end. There’s a hole in my heart that will never be filled. I miss you more than words can express. Rest easy mate, I know you will be waiting for me at the Pearly Gates. I love you so much.
