I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about Laurence this week and I’m so sorry that I didn’t think of him more often. We grew up spending a lot of time together in the school holidays and I have lovely memories of us biking around, climbing trees and fishing in the long summer days and evenings. Laurence was always a grown up soul; sensitive and serious in equal measure. I looked up to him and he looked after me. I remember marvelling at how dedicated, precise and patient Laurence was, a craftsman at whatever he chose to turn his hand to. Always building, mending or creating something. As childhood friends often do, we drifted apart as we became young men, our lives and interests moving in different directions. It is a deep regret for me that we never really came back together in our adult lives. Times like these bring in to sharp relief how transient our relationships and ultimately our lives can be and how easy it is to leave it too late to reconcile.
