Lovely tributes and a beautiful way to celebrate and say goodbye to our beloved Sheila. I have so many beautiful memories that I cherish. I am forever grateful to have spend some beautiful moments with you and Jack, Rest easy X
Memories of Sheila In September 1992 I was catapulted into Sheila’s life when I arrived in Levin to seek the Labour Party nomination for the electorate of Horowhenua. Everywhere there were trees full of blossom. Jack, who had been my English teacher when I was in Form 7 at Gisborne Girls High School, was the enthusiastic Chair of the local Labour Electorate Committee and most supportive of my seeking the candidacy. He offered to put me up at 12a York Street while I went about canvassing for support from local Labour members in the lead up to the selection meeting. I’m not sure how much say Sheila had about that initial invitation! Nevertheless, she took me in and made me most welcome. And so began a wonderful friendship which was to last for over 30 years. Not only did Sheila feed and care for me very well in those early days, but she also contributed an intelligent independent point of view into our daily conversations. It was great to be in a household full of books with the Listener arriving every week. The only time I had a slight falling out with her was when I started to do the Listener cryptic crossword which she rightly expected to have priority over! Sheila’s memory was legendary. She took an interest in all the people around her and their families, especially her own family. I was touched that she always asked after my sons by name and continued to show an interest right to the end. Sheila’s teacher training showed in many of the activities she was involved in toward the end of her life. She played a key role in the Waiopehu College community as Librarian when Jack was Principal. As I went about my MP duties, I found so many young people remembered her helping them. And she supported Jack in his Labour Party work, acting as Levin Branch secretary for many years. When I last visited Sheila, she told me she was ready to go. So she has had her wish after a life well-lived. I will always cherish her friendship.
