Tributes

Uncle Hugh, you have always been incredibly special to me, and your impact on my life is immeasurable. Your quiet stoicism within our family has been a steady source of reassurance over the years, a rock we could always depend on no matter the circumstances. I will never forget those formative years when you lived with us in Paekakariki. They hold some of my most cherished childhood memories. Your classic car, affectionately dubbed "Noddy's Car," was more than just a vehicle—it was the vessel for our adventures. I can still feel the wind in my face as we cruised down the road by the beach, the top down, and the sea air filling our lungs. Those moments were magic, simple yet profoundly special. They brought joy, connection, and a sense of freedom that will stay with me forever. I feel so blessed to have shared these precious times with you. You will be so deeply missed, but your memory will live on, in those windswept drives, and in all the ways you shaped my life for the better. All my love, Sandy

Big in stature, big in heart. A generous and kind friend who is sorely missed. You leave us with a rich vein of memories of fun times (Teletubby impersonations in Port Douglas!!), sharing good food and wine and always interesting and intelligent debates! Winter golf in Queenstown will never be the same without you, Hugh. Hope there are enough balls where you are going to keep you happy (... "what's it going over there for??!"...).

Brent & Margaret

We first met Hugh when he was a junior account executive at the Wellington advertising agency where I was creative director. Despite an age difference of, I think, four years or so, we became firm friends and he spent evenings at Diane’s and my home where he was a firm favourite with Matthew, our very young first son who called him ‘Hoo’. We also looked after him for a time after he had a very painful tooth extraction. I may have even introduced him to golf, something that became an enduring part of his life, and we certainly admired his successful business career. Diane and I have kept in touch with Hugh and Janet over the years, and have enjoyed their hospitality in Auckland several times, and it was a particular pleasure for us all when they visited us on our small holding in the Wairarapa, given they had also been small farmers! As happens so often when we lose old friends, we are very sorry we haven’t seen more of Hugh and Janet in recent years, and send our deep sympathy to Janet and their whanau.
