We met Jeanette and the family through Beach Haven Care Home where Bob was being cared for, but did not know Bob personally. However, we were given a brief glimpse into the character of the man through some wonderful family tributes at his funeral service. The stories told painted a picture of a devoted family man, loyal mate, great traveller and someone dedicated to the craft of journalism, reporting the news while still maintaining an impish ability to see the funny side of life when least expected. No question, a life very well lived. Our deepest condolences go to Bob’s family and his many friends. From Grant and Heather King
We were very saddened and shocked to learn that Bob had passed away. I first met Bob when Jeanette came to teach at Hobsonville School where I was Principal at that time. With our mutual interest and love of sport and running, I quickly felt at ease in Bob's company, and I always enjoyed chatting to Bob about anything, usually about sport. especially rugby and cricket, or our mutual interest in marathon running where we would compare notes and experiences. We thought of Bob as one of the nicest people one could wish to meet, as well as being a fine and talented journalist. Our sincere condolences to Jeanette and all of Jeanette's and Bob's family. Rest in peace. Alastair and Mary Kay.
I first knew Bob when I lived in London when I was 20 years old. That was 58 years ago. He was a lovely man, so gentle and good-natured. I am thinking of Jeanette and their family today,

Bob, I know you started out as a teacher but I’ll always remember you as a relentless learner. Your curiosity was endless and indiscriminate, deployed with equal intensity whether focused on a big news story or just something mundane I was telling you. It was only rivalled by your sense of humour, which seemed inexhaustible too. I was fortunate to be able to learn a lot from both of these traits — so I guess you remained a teacher too. With much love to the whole family.
So many memories, so many stories, so many jokes that only he and I know. I miss you Bob.....Very much My utmost condolences to Jeanette and the family. The world was a far better place for having Bob in it.
To Jeanette and family my condolences. Bob was a wonderful man caring and funny. A true gentleman! I will miss him

Sympathy to all of Bob's family. From Anne Pilkinton (nee McNeil) of Whakatane
Respected News Editor at Radio Waikato
Vale Bob I will be forever grateful that you took a punt in 1974, as the news editor at Radio Waikato, and hired a wannabe reporter with no training or experience which kick-started my career in journalism. Our paths would cross again 20 years later at 3 News, with fond memories of your sense of humour and love of a good yarn. My condolences to Jeanette, Sacha and family. Opo
Considerable respect for Bob. First met Bob when he taught at Okaiawa School in South Taranaki with me.Remember him as a talented sports person. At the annual swimming sports "Teachers versus Parents Relay" Bob demonstrated his smooth style. I remember him telling me he played for Taranaki Maoris. I said " I don't remember seeing your name in the programme to which he replied" I was T.Mokai " A tribute to the local pa site and scene of a major battle turaturamokai ( hope that's the right spelling).Deeply saddened to hear how Bob's final years were blighted by such a terrible disease. Sincere condolences to Jeanette and family.
i have not seen Bob since leaving College except for the odd occasion on television., when I would recollect the friendships made at College and the times we had together. Especially at their flat. Hello to my Stratford mates Barry and Bruce. Tom Imrie
