Farewell Hamilton, rest easy my friend. Thank you for all the laughs, and for always welcoming me in with a beer. I feel very fortunate for all the good times I had with you and Gareth. Meeting the great Serevi with you at the Hong Kong 7's was a highlight, followed closely by watching you read the entire newspaper in the South Stand dressed as an astronaut while 40,000 people partied around you. I will miss your cheeky/borderline humour, and I know your legend will live on through Gareth and the kids. Gareth, Ambrose and family, stay strong and see this great man off in style. Kei na loloma Reid
Dear Gareth and all my Samuels cousins: When I got Tamsy's message about Hammy that morning I said "Oh no!" I still feel like that. Thank you for this beautifully composed link to tomorrow's Celebration of Hammy's dear life. I will be there in spirit with Hammy and you all, sharing the memories and the tears, the laughs and the beers, the music and the songs ... Your choice of Deirdre Brownes' hymn 'Come as you are' says it all better than I can. Thank you for everything and all the best with everything for the days ahead. Love from cousin Arlene and her son Joshua in California.
Dear Gareth and the whole Samuels clan, Hammy was the kindest, most caring, friendliest guy I have had the pleasure of knowing. No matter the time of day, if I turned up, he would always be ready with a beer, a smile, and usually a huge amount of food. He treated everyone, including me – “the little white boy” or “honkie” as he liked to call me - like family. No matter how many people were at his home, he never made anyone feel like they did not belong; it was an incredible trait of his to make you feel as if you were really one of his own clan. There were years when I regretfully didn't see him, but even so, he still greeted me as if we had seen each other yesterday, generally with a "hey, white boy!" whenever we met again. Gareth and I were not the best of kids at his house sometimes, but he always put up with me and the rest of the boys with a smile and joke. I'll miss his stories, his laughter, his amazing humour, his crazy spicy sauces, but most of all, his friendship, and it saddens me to think I will not be able to say goodbye to him one last time. Bula, mate.
Dear Gareth and the Samuels family Hammy was such a wonderful cousin, nephew, grandson, and Samuels' family representative for us. He was a loving nephew to my Mum, his Aunt Thyra, keeping in such loving contact with calls and visits throughout her long life. Mum would say," Hamilton called", and we'd smile. He was also a great grandson to Nana,as were so many in the family. I remember Hammy for all his love and giving nature, on visits to Sydney or Fiji. He was always there for us on visits or calls. We will miss him. Much love, and thank you Hammy for being a lovely cousin and for being so constant in your devotion to our mother and Nana. We'll be with you all in spirit tomorrow Vanessa
Bula Gareth and all the Samuel mataqali, Our thoughts will be with you all tomorrow whilst we watch the streaming of Hamilton's farewell. We have many happy memories of parties at Eugen Place and at other events throughout the years. No doubt ' Hammy ' will be reminiscing big time up in Heaven with his good buddy Gerald 'Jacko' Jackson from their RNZAF days! Carolyn, Rayney & all the Jackson gang.
Dearest Gareth and family, Words can't express how devastated we are to hear of dad's untimely passing. He was very close to us because of mum Thyra your favourite aunt. You will be sorely missed in the Samuels family as you contributed a lot to the family history too and always made time for the family Rest in love our dearest cousin love Tamsy and Ian
I’ve lost a good sole mate. We shared a lot of memories. You were always there for me through good times and bad. Rest in peace my friend till we meet again. My condolences to Gareth and Family, Mel and family and to the Samuels family. Hazel Samuels and family.
Isa Hammy, We had great fun during our high school days in Suva and then at our last meeting at the MOB Reunion in Auckland in Feb Last year. You looked great and even coaxed you to sing a song. Vale my friend . May you soul rest in peace. Andrew Singh
One of natures Gentleman. Such a kind and caring soul. Before we became woke and stupid about such things reveled in being called “Black Sam” proud to have called him a friend. Only great memories of our time together with fellow Fijian Jacko Jackson who has also passed. RIP Sam you will be missed.
With heavy hearts we bid you farewell. Thank you for the memories which we will cherish forever. Rest in eternal love and peace ❤️
