FERGUSON, Ian Graeme
1942-2025
On Thursday 23 January 2025, Clare lost her beloved husband and soulmate of 56 years. Ian had been on long-term hemodialysis and a sudden acute illness, proved fatal.  Son of the late Roderick and Joyce Ferguson.  Brother of Stuart and the late Duncan Ferguson, Brother-in-law of Diana Ferguson, Alison and Peter Holst, Patricia and the late David Galloway. Uncle, great uncle, great grand uncle to their families. Loved cousin of Jane McCartney and Mark. Treasured uncle of Kirsten, Simon and Sam Holst, who supported him to the end. Godfather of Louise, Alistair Chater's daughter.  Kiwis always, Ian and Clare, returning to Nelson last year after 50 years in London.  Known for his sharp wit and sometimes wicked conversation, Ian had a passion for all politics, news and arts. He loved the land, sea and sailing. He is greatly missed by his friends and family, in NZ and overseas.  We are grateful to the dialysis units in Nelson and London, the caring of staff at Coastal View, and the support of Nelson Tasman Hospice, especially Sarah.  A private cremation has been held.   If you intend to participate, in the nautical memorial celebration,  please send contact details, to Clare and family via Shone and Shirley Funeral Directors, 164 Tahunanui Drive, Tahunanui 7011 or email funerals@shoneandshirley.co.nz

Dear Clare & Family. I have no connection with your late husband or the family. However, I was intrigued by your lengthy announcement in the Daily Telegraph, the like of which I have never read there before. Such interesting detail. Coincidentally, my wife and I (both British and living in Kent) will be visiting Nelson in March - we have visited several times before - to spend time with our lovely NZ friend of 70 years. So there is a slight connection. I was moved by the video of Ian's final voyage, the choice of words and poems, the tribute by Clare and all in the beautiful setting of the blue Tasman Sea. I gained a sense of a life well-lived, a remarkable charismatic man who achieved so much, was loved by many. and is mourned by many. Thank you for enabling strangers like us, as well as family and friends from near and far, to hear a little about Ian's life and share in his moving farewell. We extend our sympathy and condolences. Kind regards. Trevor Sturgess

What a fitting and fabulous “Goodbye” to Clare’s darling Ian. Ian had a life full of amazing experiences and I relished his storytelling during many happy lunches in Notting Hill. I sailed a few times with him and always felt completely safe when he was skipper. He was very much in charge in every way and would admonish Clare and I if we entered port inappropriately dressed … enough said! Happy memories! He will indeed be much missed by many people. Bravo Clarabel et Bon Courage. xxx

Much love to you Clare Ian would have loved the send off you have given him. Perfect ending to a special and interesting man who will be remembered and touched the lives of many lucky people. x

We have shared the privilege and pleasure of our friendship with Ian over the years, both in Nelson and London. Ian has been a good friend and a wonderful companion either at the (sumptuous) dinner table or afterwards sharing a glass of something special. Clare and Ian’ hospitality is legendary. His wicked sense of humour, his endless supply of memories and his insatiable curiosity about all things made time with Ian an absolute delight. You will be sorely missed Ian. Rest well.

I have many fond memories of joyful parties in London during the early 80’s when Ian added much jollity to the occasions. More importantly, our wonderful sailing adventures particularly those in The Ionian Sea on “The Isle of Gigha” our beloved 35’ yacht. With Ian and Clare on board, we discovered the delightful little near ruin of Melianou which gave countless years of joy to all of us. We have many fond memories of Ian and hope he is now resting in peace. Johnny Alexander
