Tributes

From Cathy. Fred is my cousin in law. Elaine is my cousin. I have two fond memories of Fred. First fond memory; when I was a teenager, this would have been about 60 years ago!!! I loved babies. I still do. Stephen was two months old and I went to stay with Elaine and Fred in Upper Hutt so that I could spend time with them and help Elaine with new baby. It was well known that Fred had been a computer need since birth and not so well known that he had a competitive streak. He had set up his computer with a simple game. Yes well before the time of gaming. When a light showed on the computer you would press a key as quick as you could and your response was timed. I often beat him and he wasn't happy until he had then beat me so that the computer data showed that he ws the winner. A lot of fun. My second fond memory; my mum was in Matua Rest Home along with Aunty Bernie and Elaine. When I visited Mum I often saw Fred hooning around in his car going fast over the speed bumps. He was wonderful to Elaine. He would pick her up every day and take her to a café for a coffee or lunch. I often saw them in a café when I was out with friends. He also had dinner with her every night. Memories to cherish forever. Rest in Peace Fred.

My brother Fred was a lovely man. He was always pleased to see people and he had a happy nature. He was my second brother. I was the eldest child of Sadie. and Victor followed by Ross. Fred was born 12 years after me, so I was very much the older sister and was called upon by my mother to babysit him and Graham quite often so that my parents could go out to the pictures and the races. He was named Frederick John in memory of our father's father Frederick John Chell. This name has been used in the past a number of times. Fred, as a young boy was a very confident and active child. As my wedding approached, a kitchen evening was arranged and Fred was one of those present. During the night, it was asked if anyone was able to play something on the piano for entertainment. All was quiet until a small voice piped up and said" "Yes, I can play." All eyes were on 8-year-old Fred as he proudly stepped up to the piano. He was as proud as punch as he played the few notes that he knew. Fred had at that stage, only had 2 lessons from a piano teacher. From there he went on to develop his wonderful ability with the piano over his lifetime which he has shared with his family and friends over the years. I asked Fred to record his piano playing for me, and he did. I still have and play the tape he gave me. Fred achieved well at school in spite of a report stating that he was late for school many times. He thought that he was taking a shortcut by going through a swampy area to get to school, but obviously it wasn't! Our mother didn't know that he was doing this and in fact the swamp was really quite dangerous. Another memory of Fred is his travelling up to Otaika Valley in his VW to spend time with us whilst attending Auckland University. I remember going to his capping ceremony when he graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree. Mum and I were both very proud of him that day. My dear brother, I will not forget you.
