My Memories of Bernard Smart I first met Bernie while I was driving a bus through Manaia around 2000, I stopped the bus so my passengers could try out the fish and chips that was being served from what was reputed as the best fish and chip shop in New Zealand. And then years later while I was courting his daughter Jillian who introduced me to him and Beverley on the day after there 50th wedding anniversary. As you probably already know, I married Jillian one of his daughters in 2020 and over the following years I met up with Bernie and Beverley either in new Plymouth During our meetings I learned that both he and I shared similar interests mostly due to the previous history of being associated with the horticulture industry. Bernie, who ran his own Market garden and me, I used to teach horticulture for the local tertiary training institutes in Whanganui. When Bernie and Beverley visited my home, he just had to wander around my garden to have a look and to pick any fruit that was ripe, he was especially interested in picking ripe figs! He also discovered that one of my neighbours had a tree laden with ripe avacados which he took a fancy too. I also discovered that Bernie enjoyed pulling small machines apart with the intention of fixing them, he did this for me with some successes. Yes Bernie was a jack of all trades and spent a lot of time fixing things around his home with hammer and saws, spanners, screw drivers and power tools and a lot of “elbow grease”. On one of his trips to our house in Whanganui he found me installing a set of stairs into the stairwell that would access the 2nd floor in our garage, he offered to hold in in place while I fixed it to the support framing. He took the weight of it while I reached for my tools, it slipped out of his hands and landed on top of him. In Horror I climbed underneath to find him all intact and smiling, phew, I hadnt killed him!--
