Countless memories of Uncle Martin, from admiring all the stereo, CQ and other tech he had in the early 80s, relief when he helped us set up our first video recorder (and sorted a few other electronic issues over the years that were beyond us but for which he had an exceptional ability), holidays together at Oakura & later visiting Pakari, and all those times he and Dad made life difficult (to say the least) for the hapless car sales people around Auckland, as their combined knowledge exceeded any dealer’s! He was always very kind to us, and in later years I really appreciated some of the family history he told me. He will always be remembered fondly.
Uncle Martin was a highly knowledgeable and intelligent person. This - combined with his sharp wit -meant a guarantee of interesting conversation with him. I have many fond memories of Uncle Martin from my childhood, especially from family gatherings at Hawera Road and up at Pakiri. Uncle Martin stayed impressively busy and active all through his retirement. The way he made the absolute most of his 88 years certainly sets a model example for all of us.
Snowline Ski Club where Dad was a long time member have shared this thoughtful tribute with their membership which I share following. We are grateful for Snowline's thoughtful tribute: In Memory of Martin Ellis Martin was one of our earliest members, joining when we were still the ATI Ski Club, based at the Auckland Technical Institute on Wellesley Street. Over the years, he contributed immensely to the club in various roles, including Committee Member, Treasurer and President. Martin was a long-time supporter, leader and friend to many in the Club. Martin had a remarkable eye for detail and kept us on the straight and narrow especially around procedural, financial, and legal requirements. His guidance was invaluable and always delivered with calm assurance. Beyond his administrative contributions, Martin was a master negotiator — often sourcing excellent deals for the Club, including the much-loved stereo system! Perhaps it was his role as Financial Director at Thorn EMI in Auckland that helped with this! A passionate skier, Martin was known for making the most of every day on the mountain. He was out the door as early as possible, and his enthusiasm inspired many of us to seize the day. Martin was a very technically precise skier who loved exploring every corner of the slopes — often leading his fellow Clubbies on adventurous expeditions to hidden spots, sometimes with exciting consequences! He shared his love for skiing with his children, Michael, Susan, Louise and Caroline, encouraging them in their journey to become high-performance skiers and racers. Martin and his family were dedicated supporters of club events, whether on the mountain or in Auckland, attending races, Christmas functions, fundraisers, and ski sales. Many of our fondest memories come from gatherings and committee meetings hosted at the family home, where we were always warmly welcomed.
