With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for his life, we remember and honour our beloved father, Bent.
Born in Denmark, Dad embarked on a courageous journey at just 16 years old, migrating with his family to New Zealand in 1950 aboard a humble cargo ship. They arrived with no knowledge of the English language, no safety net, and left behind generations of family, from parents, grandparents, siblings, and cousins, to begin a new life. With quiet determination, they forged a path in a foreign land, laying the foundation for the life we have all been blessed with today.
Dad had a deep love for music. He played both the saxophone and the banjo, often performing in a band alongside his brother Gunnar, who played the piano accordion. Jazz was his passion in his younger days, and to our surprise and delight, he grew to absolutely love the music of ABBA later in life. In his final hours, we played ABBA for him, knowing it would have brought a smile to his face and a warmth to his heart.
At the age of 27, Dad met and married Mum, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, resilience, and shared purpose. Together, after working in building and administration, they established a commercial cleaning business, which they ran side by side until they retired. Their retirement years were peaceful and simple, no grand adventures, just a few meaningful trips to Australia in the 1990s to visit family and enjoy each other's company.
Dad was a gentle soul; he was quiet, kind, and deeply thoughtful. He rarely raised his voice, but when he did, it was only when something truly mattered. He was a man of quiet strength, quiet love, and quiet pride. His presence was steady, his heart generous, and his legacy enduring.
He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in music, in memory, and in all the quiet moments where love lingers most.
With all our love,
The Kristensen Family ❤️
