Michael Paul Ekdahl

Also known as "Mike"

30 April 19692 August 2026

Passed away reluctantly on Sunday, 2 August 2026, after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Mike was a true gentleman and a man held in the highest regard by many. Respected throughout the community and widely admired as a successful businessman, he was known for his honesty, integrity, and straightforward nature. Mike was a man who was invested deeply in others. He took the time to listen, encouraged people to pursue their goals, and supported them to become the very best version of themselves.

Away from business, Mike had a lifelong passion for muscle cars and enjoyed the friendships and memories that came with them. Mike cherished the moments and memories with his huge circle of friends, he was everybody’s best mate.

Mike's wisdom, generosity, humour, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Soul mate, best friend, and everything to Megan (Meg). Loyal loving friend / Dad to Ben Thom. And loved by his #1 companion Marlo. Always and forever our Hero.

Deeply loved son of Pat and Paul Ekdahl, Best bro and friend to Steve and Petreena, and loved brother to Phill and Virginia. Awesome uncle to his nieces and nephews, loved member of the Ekdahl Moir and Pierce families.

Mike's family warmly invite friends and family to join them in celebrating his life and honouring his 57 years at the Devon Hotel, 390 Devon Street East, New Plymouth, on Monday, 10 August 2026 at 1.00pm. For those unable to attend, Mike’s funeral will be livestreamed on his tribute page at eagars.co.nz/Mike. Respectfully, no flowers please.

"A life measured not by what was gained, but by the difference made in the lives of others."

A great human being - Mike. Gave me the time of day, encouraged me with (in my opinion) big decisions. Helped my wife and I buy our 1st house, helped me get my 1st full-time job. Mike, you were one of the good ones, I miss you mate. Alex Clarke

I remember Michael from the St Pius days and the neighbourhood, hanging out in the hood. A highlight from those days was a drive in his uncles Mustang Cobra! We did get up to a fair bit of mischief. A nice, friendly guy who was good to me and my family. R.I.P

As a frequent visitor to Grace Square in Auckland, we always looked forward to our conversations with Mike. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, no matter the topic, and always made those around him feel welcome. That gift was clearly evident in the heartfelt eulogies shared at his service and in the many people who came to pay their last respects, each with their own story of how Mike had touched their lives. Mike was a genuine, generous, and caring individual whose warmth and character left a lasting impression on so many. The world is a little poorer for his passing, but significantly richer for having known him. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. Rest in peace, Mike. Our thoughts remain with Meg, Ben, and the wider family as they reflect on a life so well lived and the many memories Mike leaves behind. Rickey & Raegan Ward Trish Clark Grace Square, Auckland

Mike created an incredible legacy — not only through his business life, but, more importantly, through the impact he made on people’s lives. I feel so fortunate to have crossed paths with Mike about 12 months ago. We would spend time together down the walkway, and he had this incredible ability to make you feel like you were a million bucks. When he spoke to you, his whole attention was on you. He made you feel seen. I remember sitting with him in the hot Taranaki sunshine, and although the sun was shining brightly, somehow Mike was the one shining the brightest. He once told me I was brave. I remember thinking, Mike, whatever hurdles you were facing at that time, whatever it took to get you onto that trike, you were the brave one. Yet, as was so typical of Mike, he was the one focused on me. I feel incredibly fortunate that he came into my life, even for such a short time. The memories I have of him will always be treasured. If angels do walk this earth, I believe Mike was one of them. Rest peacefully, Mike. You truly made this world a brighter place.

Hugely generous with his time, with a genuine interest and care for others, a tireless advocate for the New Plymouth Business Community, an outstanding human – you will be missed, Mike. Megan, Ben, Steve, Paul and family, thoughts are with you all in this difficult time.

I grew up with Mike’s cousin, Mike Fearn, and through that connection I had the privilege of spending a lot of time around the Ekdahl family, including Mike, during my teenage years. As young men, we looked up to these guys enormously, and they shaped who we’ve become without us even realising it at the time. Mike always had time for a chat. He was genuinely interested in what you were doing with your life, no matter how small it might have seemed. Talking with Mike, he had this way of making you feel like you were someone special, properly heard. He’d offer advice when it was needed, never forced, and you always walked away feeling uplifted and ready to take on the world.

Being Mike’s Aunty, I’ve known him since he was born. I would push him in his pushchair, as they were called in those days, and make him laugh. As he grew up into adulthood, I felt that when he entered a room, it lit up with his presence. Not just his height, but his personality. Always happy and shining, welcoming and respectful. He even helped me plan a surprise visit to his parents by letting me stay at his place the day I arrived, and then delivering me the next day. I got to know and love Meg too, the perfect match for Mike. Mike had a deep love for ice cream, and could be found checking out Pat and Paul’s freezer when he came to the house. He told me one day that he had his own ice cream scoop there, because it was a big one, and pulled it out of the drawer. And used it! The ice cream pig! He loved a joke and a chat, and accepted everyone as they were. I had several photos of him as a baby and youngster, which I sent him a few months ago, and he was really appreciative. For Mike, the small things were the big things, and Richard and I feel privileged to have had him in our lives. His 57 years were very full. A wonderful much loved man and a very hard act to follow. Dear Mike These are not easy words to write. While we have been there with you throughout the toughest chapter of your life, we don't think we could ever have been prepared for the reality of losing you. Our Big M. Lilly's “Uncle Mike” and amazing god dad. Glenn's greatest mate and champion since Francis Douglas days. You have always been there, supporting us, advising us, debating with us and laughing alongside us. It's the little moments we will truly miss. You popping in with Marlo and your coffee pods, just in case we'd run out. Making you ice cream cake and feeding you up with Lilly's freshly baked choc chip cookies, we swear you could smell them from your house. The "don't tell Meg" moments when you'd reach for just one more biscuit, or go for a sneaky pie with Glenn. Meeting for beers in your garage, taking a drive with you in your Corvette, going for dog walks and coffee, drinking champagne with you and Meg under the cabana by your pool, and dancing with you on your deck. Being there with us on our wedding day, giving Lilly cuddles as a newborn, your thoughtful and fun gifts you surprised her with and being an inspiration to Jordi and Kaleb. You have left an immeasurable hole in our hearts and our lives. You showed us just how generous the human heart can be. You lived life to the fullest and, while incredibly successful in business, we heard very little about your achievements because you were far more interested in celebrating everyone else's. You always found the positive in everything, built people up, and saw the best in them. Most of all, you taught us the importance of making the most of now. We will try to follow your advice – to work less and spend more time doing what we love. You are one of a kind, Mikey. We promise we'll look after Meg, Ben and Marlo. Rest easy, Big M. You are dearly loved and will be forever missed. Love always Glenn, Cress, Lilly & Sadie xxx

Some people leave a lasting impression through what they achieve. Others leave it through the way they treat people. Mike did both. I had the privilege of knowing Mike not only as a respected and valued businessman and strong advocate for our local business community, but also as a fellow Box-Fit partner and believe me, Mike was strong as an ox! He was fierce, determined and certainly someone you wanted on your side rather than trying to keep up with! Mike had a wonderful ability to combine passion with good humour. He was never afraid to engage in a bit of light-hearted but meaningful banter with NPDC from time to time and he always did so with respect, thoughtfulness and a genuine desire to make a difference. What stood out most about Mike was his approachability. He was a man who listened, considered things carefully and expressed his views with conviction, while always treating others with respect. That is the Mike I will remember. A good man. A strong man. A passionate advocate. A valued member of our community and a bloody good Box-Fit partner! Mike will be sadly missed but never forgotten. My heartfelt condolences go to Mike’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest easy, Mike. It was a privilege to know you. Cr Sam Bennett

I was shocked and saddened on learning of Michael's passing. My condolences to his wife and family, Pat and Paul, Phillip and 'Ginny, his other family members, and friends. I first met Michael in the mid '80s when my then wife, Helen, started working for the Ekdahls. Over the years we had many good times and I have pleasant memories of Michael and the Ekdahl family. Beers now and then at the Cob & Co. back bar with Paul , Bruce and the boys , White Hart Red Room when I played in a band there, Rhapsody and many other social occassions. Michael kindly drove a rental furniture truck for us when we moved back to Picton. I remember him as always helpful, jovial and kidding around a lot. Since moving to Oz in 2006 I lost touch but still remember our times together. RIP Michael

Mike, You achieved things most people could only imagine while carrying burdens few could ever understand. Yet you remained humble, optimistic and generous. You never let illness define you. It was something you faced and dealt with, not something that you became Whenever we had an important business decision to make, you were one of the first people we'd call. You had an extraordinary ability to cut through the noise and find the common-sense answer. You were a visionary, practical, wise and above all, someone we trusted completely. Meg, thank you. Your love, strength and unwavering devotion gave Mike every opportunity to keep living life on his own terms. You carried more than most will ever know, always with grace, dignity and love. Ben, your dad could not have been prouder of the man you've become. The care, loyalty and friendship you showed him meant more than words can express. It brought us great comfort knowing Mike was surrounded by the two people he loved most, together with wonderful family and loyal friends. When we think of Mike, we don't think first about the businesses he built or the projects he completed. We think about how he made people feel. He made people feel welcome, valued and believed in. He celebrated the success of others and quietly made everyone's life better. Thank you for your friendship, wisdom, laughter, generosity and belief in us. We have never known anyone quite like you and we probably never will. You were an extraordinary husband, a devoted father, an inspiring businessman and to us, the very best mate anyone could hope to have. Our lives are richer because you were part of them. Rest peacefully, mate. We'll look after Meg and Ben, keep telling your stories and keep laughing at the memories. As long as we do, a part of you will always be with us. Farewell, our friend. We we privileged to have Mike and Meg as neighbours at the “yellow houses” in Ponsonby. You both embody the very best of Taranaki values and it was such a pleasure to have a taste of the Naki in your many visits up to Auckland. Mike was keen to have a yarn, happy to lend a hand and quick to check in on others even when facing some tough personal challenges of his own. The genorosity and care for others never went unnoticed and we loved being around Mikes zest for life - whether cruising the streets of Ponsonby on the scooter with his fave dog by his side, stopping in for a chat or surprising our daughter Molly with treats hidden amongst his collection of “little people statues” he brought joy wherever we went. Mike lived life to the full and he lived it well - we were priveleged to have known him and share a part of his journey Ana moriarty, Chris and Molly Ermerins - 81G

Box Office Boxing is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Life member Mike Ekdahl. Mike joined Box Office Boxing in 2009 after renting one of his properties to head coach Jake Rapira. After hearing about what the club was about he didn’t hesitate to not only become an active member in BoxFIT classes but also a member of the executive. Mike dedicated many years to Box Office Boxing as an executive member and played a crucial role in the relocation and establishment of the gym in our current location. Mike was a true friend and wonderful person and will be missed greatly. Our best wishes to his wife and family.

‘The energizer Bunny’ Thank you so much for bringing us into your lives. You fought so hard to stay just to have one more yarn with the people you loved! And through it all you ALWAYS asked ‘How are you? How’s the family? How the business going? Can I help you in anyway? Never wanting anyone to worry about you… The kindest most generous man around who made everyone feel like his best friend, and that talking with you was the most important thing in that moment… Your love for Meg and Ben is unwavering and the biggest priority you had above anything else. I’m so proud of you Meg and Ben for the way you loved and cared for Mike this whole time and I know how proud of you he will be of you both. Sad to hear of Mike's passing. When I was a teenager living on Timandra Street, our family were friends with Pat and Paul. It's a reminder of just how quickly time passes. Even as a young fella, Mike had a wonderful sense of humour and a way of touching people's hearts. He'll be remembered fondly.

Megan, I am so sorry and so sad for you - for the loss of your Mike, and for the billion things you will grieve every single day without him. x ‘MIKE THE GREAT’ A decent one, helluva good bastard, Merv would say. Thankyou for being our friend x Big hugs to you all Ben, Mikes family, friends & Marlow Mary x

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of well known New Plymouth commercial property identity Mike Ekdahl. I first met Mike through Box Office Boxing. He wasn't just passionate about the sport, he was one of the people who quietly did the heavy lifting behind the scenes because he believed in the difference boxing could make to young lives in New Plymouth. He also embraced the sport himself and could regularly be spotted smashing the heavy bags or taking part in Box-Fit classes. In later years, Mike would often comment on stories published by The Ngāmotu Advocate, particularly those involving New Plymouth's CBD, an area he dedicated much of his professional life to helping shape and improve. He cared deeply about the city, and that passion was reflected in both his work and his engagement with the community. Mike will be remembered not only for his contribution to commercial property, but also for the genuine interest he took in the people and future of Taranaki. He was one of those people who quietly made a difference without seeking recognition. Our thoughts are with Mike's family, friends, colleagues and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest easy, Mike. ✨ We feel so lucky to have crossed paths with you and are beyond grateful for everything you have done for us. Thank you for being so interested in everything we’re up to, always having the time for a yarn and just being one heck of a human. Your kindness, generosity and sense of humour will always be remembered. I remember you saying to me recently, “If we can leave people better for having known us, we’ve done something right” - you bloody nailed it, Mike. What a legacy. Our hearts are with you, Meg. Sending you all love and strength throughout this difficult time and beyond. We hope you can find some peace again soon and know you have so much love and support beside you xxx All our love, Luke, Allie & George 💛

Mike was one of those genuinely good people who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. I knew him through my dad, and he was always kind, generous with his time, and someone who made you feel welcome. He made a real difference to New Plymouth and to so many people and businesses along the way. Rest easy, Mike. You'll be remembered fondly.
