Our relationship with James started when we were managing the Titoki Healing Centre near Whakatane, a favourite stomping ground for James, James vision for how the centre could be a sanctuary to returning mission personnel was able to be backed by his administration of the Mary Atkin Trust. We then benefitted also from that relationship as we continued to provide debriefing services to returned cross cultural workers in our own home once we had left Titoki. James was forward seeing and big hearted. His contribution towards the accomodation of mission families and their debriefing will be a part of his legacy.
Uncle James found joy in life’s simplest moments and had a deep appreciation for the beauty in nature and a love of sailing. He was opinionated, but he had so much wisdom and always had an interesting perspective to share. He unintentionally made me laugh, and I always looked forward to our conversations and debates about life. I learned a lot from him and will always remember his stories, his humour, and the way he saw the world. Achernar will carry your memory with her. Whenever I’m out on the water in New Zealand, I know I’ll think of you.
So very very sad. I am forever grateful to James for inviting me and introducing me to sailing. It was on Achenar and was a blast. Sailing was such a joy and our children have all been active in sailing on Akld harbour as a consequence. Rest in peace
In the ten years I have worked with James in connection with Titoki, James has shown himself to be innovative in his vision for both Titoki and fulfilling the mission of the Mary Atkin Trust. What was achieved together was based on a deep and mutual model of trust and excellent communication. In this relationship he exhibited an unprecedented spirit of generosity and encouragement. He was always thoughtful and far-seeing. His whole manner of life and engagement with others was underpinned by his unwavering commitment to Christ. His death for those who knew him , will prove a great loss for his family, friends and co-workers.
Thank you James for all the wonderful sailing you helped create in the Mahurang
We’re both sad to hear about James passing away. We have fond memories of sailing against James and his lovely family on Achernar, all dressed in yellow. James was always a gentleman, quietly spoken, genuine and generous. With condolences and love to his family, Lynn and G from Nocturne
When it comes to sailing and boats or sails even far away on the horizon no-one or AI will ever come close to your critical eye or astounding level of knowledge. Now I won't get your subtle nod, quiet frown or something sharper. A true brother in my heart forever.
