Tributes

I met Don and Lesley when I first moved into my apartment at 5 The Promenade. Don was the Chairperson of out Body Corp. Committee. That was just over 4 years ago. Don was a very approachable gentleman who was always available to talk about matters to do with the property. I really appreciated his respectful and responsible communication with us - he always had a smile to share. He will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathy to Lesley and their family.

To Les and Family. We first met the Macs in 1986 when we moved to Tawa from Christchurch and Anne started work at St Mary's College, where Les was a Maths teacher. We began to socialise together with lots of great dinner parties and lots of fun and laughter. We shared wonderful and adventurous holidays, both here in NZ and also in Australia, Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii. Don always managed to find a Honda Showroom to visit, no matter where we were!! Do you remember Graham's 60th Birthday Party, Les, which was a themed one - it was a "G" Party? Don came in his Groucho Marx mask (which he bought in Hawaii after scraping his nose, cheeks and chin, trying to defeat a huge surfing wave) and you were Goldfinger - literally that, a gold finger!! Great costumes!! Even when you moved to Auckland, we still kept in touch and managed to catch up, most recently in January. Don will be missed by so many - his family, relatives and the numerous friends he made over the years.

Dear Don, We first met in 1974 when I was posted to the MWD Napier Office as a green young engineer and you were a senior architect in that office. We worked together on the Napier girls High 2 storey block. We formed a friendship then which has spanned the 52 years since as we have moved around from place to place. You have been a great and supportive mate to me and my family. My own home will always remain as a testament and reminder to your skill as an architect. You had an amazing imagination of how difficult building sites could be developed, first with your Paparata St home, built on what would have been an old slip circle ground failure, then with your Duthie St property where you had an old house picked up by a house moving transporter, taken down onto the road and turned around and then taken back up onto the site to the back end of the section to be better sited to the sun and view, and positioned over a new garage. You then built wonderful new house in front on the street corner. You then went on to develop another new house further up Duthie St, on a site that had an earthquake fault running through it. What a challenge. You were an extraordinarily talented architect. I will always value the friendship we shared and we will greatly miss you.

He was a wonderful person to work with and know and provided me with a lot of fatherly mentorship through my life as I lost my father at a young age. He was a true gentleman and his extraordinary kindness made him standout from the crowd. We will miss him dearly and our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

For many years Don was the Chairman of our Body Corporate @ 5 The Promenade. Don put an enormous amount of time into this task and the residents greatly benefitted from his design and construction knowledge. There was no problem he could not solve and he was very careful and wise regarding our finances. We all greatly appreciate what he did for us, he will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with the MacIntosh family and I am so sorry that I cannot attend Don's service. Susan Heap

Greetings. I am assuming that this is the late Don Mackintosh who was a Ministry of Works architect in the 1970s/80s? I had the pleasure of working with Don on the National Library Building project, opposite Parliament in Wellington, from 1982 forward, when I joined the Library's staff. It was a good, positive, respectful working relationship and I am saddened to learn of his death. Very sincere condolences to the family. Regards, Alan Smith, Lower Hutt, alanesmith@xtra.co.nz
