Shirley Audrey Syrena Patricia Kelly

19 March 19312 November 2025

“ Our darling dutchess Shirl passed away in her sleep this morning in her 94th year. She has been surounded by our loving ‘Sitting with Shirl’ friends and I am so grateful to these incredible carers at Riverside Residential care, Maungaturoto who tenderly took care of her every need.  She passed with mana and aroha - You know who you are and I love you all.
Mama Shirl, im going to bloody miss you❣️
You tread the stage boards with this young actress and inspired me with your talent, impecible comic timing, velvet voice and potty mouth.
You told the little sisters of the Poor that I was pregnant under my nun habit.
You cut Eliza’s cord and gave her an inny.
You brought Jann to me so you gave us David and Rosie
You loved all the dogs in the world
And were Lottie’s loving seeing human person.
You listened with wise discernment to my every frustration and gave me firm guidance.

I am so grateful and proud to have been the daughter you never had.
Oh and that big screaming match we had at Carey’s Bay Pub that day… you were right Shirl - Shakespeare does lose its magic when translated in Te Reo Māori.  Your loving friend, Julie.

THERE WILL BE 2 BIG FINAL CURTAIN CALLS WITH STANDING OVATIONS FOR
SHIRLEY AUDREY SYRENA PATRICIA KELLY❣️👏🏽 (See above for the memorial details and dates.)

Tributes

My tribute to Shirley starts: "It's so quiet here and although a force of light and love has left the world. . ." and continues, under the title "what do you want to say, Shirley*" here: https://www.outsidelight.online/poetry/poetry-political-works/ Best, Simon

Though Shirley (Aunty Shirl to all my family) may have been so far away from us for most of our lives, she was always very close to our hearts. Often spoken of during family chats & always bringing a smile to our faces as we recalled her happy-go-lucky outlook on the world. Always happy to talk with anyone & everyone whether friend or stranger. Christmas's & Birthday's as a child were always magical as we knew Shirley & Ted would always send us a little something from the other side of the world! Finally getting to meet them both on their adventures to the uk in years past was a wonderful experience. Sadly I have never made it out to NZ but will always be very pleased that my Dad Alan & Mum Hazel have visited & been guided, entertained & thoroughly spoiled with Aunty Shirl's amazing hospitality. It's great to think she travelled all over the UK & spent time with family here & abroad in Spain. Even in her later years she remembered my two daughters Hester & Lizzie (great great nieces) on special occasions, &' they felt the same joy I had as a child. Shirley will be deeply missed by us all & never forgotten. Thank you to all in NZ who cared for this lovely lady in her last years. Bless you Shirley. David, Vicky, Hester& Lizzie xoxo

Condolences on the passing of Shirley. We have fond memories of Shirley (and Ted) when they were our neighbours when the came to live in Dunedin. They were friendly and fun. Over the years we were always pleased to see Shirley when she was in Dunedin, as she was us. We loved attending shows she was acting in and having a catch up when we could.
