I was very sad to hear that Bruce had passed. He was such a warm, friendly gentleman and made me feel welcome from the first moment I met him. Rest in love, with Megan xx

18 November 2025 Bruce was always in my life as one of our Wyness cousins, (my father’s sister’s family) and the source of much envy with their larger than life family adventures and fun, childhood memories of visits to Levin and holidays at Turakina Beach. It was in the 1990s that we, John and I, came to know Bruce as the very special person he is and developed a richer relationship, thanks to meeting Chris and Paula, about to embark on the 1997 Coast to Coast, the adventure race across the Southern Alps. Bruce took a week out to come south to be a “Support Person’, a key role in helping Chris and Paula. Bruce, the father extraordinaire, was efficiently organised and prepared, unflustered amidst the chaos of hundreds of competitors and support teams, judging the mood, the touch of humour to soothe the tensions of our two competitors!! He did this twice – Chris and Paula came back for a second round in 1998. Fabulous memories and epic stories. In Sydney – late 90’s visits – I saw another Bruce, the high-flyer, suave business executive, suits, jetting off to ‘important’ meetings at one time, as we enjoyed his flash apartment, pool on top. And seeing his pleasure and delight at meeting Carole. It has been a joy to see your wonderful partnership together over the years. We admire the genuine love, respect and care Bruce has shown for his sisters. He truly was present for them to call on for advice and guidance. We will miss the gentle camaraderie and the bottle of pinot to the winner, between the Crusaders and Bruce’s team, the Chiefs. We will miss the many visits and stays at Godley Lane over the last years. What a glorious place you and Carole have created for family gatherings that we have loved being part of in visits North. Most of all, we will miss the wonderful, caring, thoughtful, talented, irreverent, sharp King of the Clan. And to Carole, we are immensely sad for you that Bruce has died all too soon. One of the warmest people we were ever privileged to know. Our youngest Ahsoka was so calm in his arms when we last saw him. So glad we got to see him last year at our home in Wales. Sending all our love.

The North Shore Writers Group mourns the loss of our dear friend and fellow writer, Bruce Wyness. He was a gifted storyteller, thoughtful observer of life, and a kind-hearted presence who enriched every meeting with his wisdom and quiet humour. Bruce was the author of Coffee with Strangers, a moving collection of short stories written with his two daughters and published through Tim Owen of our group. In it, Bruce, Megan, and Tami captured the beauty and complexity of ordinary lives. The stories are poignant, funny, and deeply human. The stories Bruce wrote showed his keen observation skills and were always laced with unexpected twists, leaving us gasping with shock or rolling with laughter. His writing featured in several anthologies: * North Shore Writers Group – Fire on Water (2023) and Don’t Forget to Shut the Gate (2024) * Auckland Writers Anthologies – Tales of the Hauraki Gulf (2024) and Tales of the Waitākere Ranges (2025) Bruce’s curiosity and storytelling extended beyond fiction. In 2024, he proudly shared with us his published golf article in the Rotorua Daily Post, part of the New Zealand Herald group. Another example of his broad interests and ability to see stories everywhere. Reflecting on his time with us, Bruce once said: “It’s not easy revealing your secret thoughts, speaking out loud the stories in your head and sharing those words, but with this group it has always felt safe. Their critique is always given with care and positive support. It’s a lovely place to be.” Those words reflect the spirit Bruce brought to our group. One of generosity, encouragement, and integrity. We are grateful for his friendship and for the legacy of words he leaves behind. His voice will be missed, but never forgotten. Our thoughts are with Carole and Bruce’s family.

Bruce - we have wonderful memories from a friendship spanning over 53 years. Our friendship started when we became neighbours each in our first home built in Juniper Road. Those days the area was deemed part of Mairangi Bay. Weekends spent mixing concrete, laying paths, drives, building fences. Carless days in the seventies which meant car pooling. Family camping holidays up north at Jacks Bay when summers were long and hot, fun times. In later years our friendship was rekindled when on retirement you persuaded me to take up golf again. Much laughter and frustration, your encouragement was infectious. Golf Wednesdays became an enjoyable ritual. There is now a huge gap in our foursome. You did a lot in your life, especially travel which created great memories for you and Carole. Like so many of your friends we feel privileged to have been a friend. John and Vicki MacLennan

to Bruce I remember the young years when we were groovy we went to `High Society´ can you recall the movie? We waltzed we fox-trotted around the room the bible class meet-up was over too soon. Racing home so fast in your blue Austin 30 I laughed at the joy ride miles per hour was 40. Our beach trips were so full of fun we´d go with our mates and soak up the sun. The motor races came around every year although so noisy we didn´t care. I won´t forget those days in our teens so innocent we were not so long ago it seems. We lived our own lives different paths we took now both our names are in an anthology book. I hope your heavenly journey is peaceful and bright I will watch all the stars and look for you each night. Farewell dear mate say hi to my Dad, and to all the loving people we were lucky to have.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bruce, as his first cousin, for the first time in January this year. He and Carole very kindly hosted a BBQ at their lovely home to introduce me to his sisters and another cousin. We kept in touch throughout the year and developed a great relationship. I will miss him greatly. My thoughts and love is with Carole and the rest of the family at this very difficult time.

Bruce and I reconnected via Facebook 8 years ago. We’d been close childhood friends in Levin but had not had contact for over 50 years. It was very special to reconnect, but we didn’t do that face-to-face until March this year when he was already unwell. He was a very special fellow. Robyn and I feel deep sadness that he is gone. Our love to you, Carole, and to all of Bruce’s family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time and going forward. Colin & Robyn Trethewey

Very sorry and shocked to hear of Bruce's passing. An old, very close primary and college school friend of Don from their Levin days, and rugby teammate for Horowhenua College Old Boys. Then later our friendship picked up when we both lived in East Coast Bays. Our deepest sympathy to Carole and family. RIP Don and Joy Lockyer
