Dear Jill, Today I watched the service on-line. A wonderful tribute to Laurie. I was reminded of the happy times we spent with you both during our time in New Plymouth. Keep strong, and you are in my thoughts. Love June McCluskey
To the Clelands, I very much appreciated the live stream funeral service for Laurie today. I last saw Laurie at the burial of my Dad (Arthur Garrett) at Awanui Cemetery almost 5 years ago now. I still remember Laurie's smile from back then! My Dad and Laurie were both born in February 1940. My Mum, Margaret Garrett (nee Morine), grew up on the same street as Laurie. She was sharing some of her memories of Laurie with me this week (including of french cricket!) She also very much appreciated the live stream service today. It was so good to see at the service many who I recognised from when I grew up in New Plymouth. My thoughts are with you all at this time. Thanks also to Eagers and to those who spoke for such a well presented service. Bruce Garrett Wellington
Jill and Family,Please accept our deepest sympathy on your sad loss. Thinking of you. What a lovely service. Terry & Linda Mitchell
Dearest Jill and family, We're thinking of you all fondly at this sad time. We will certainly miss Laurie's lovable rogue personality and wry sense of humour. We have many fond memories of times spent with all our families back in our teenage days of sunny summer holidays at Simpsons Beach. It was always a comfort to know that Laurie was part of Dad's blue water exploits around the Pacific. We are sure he always kept things light hearted no matter the size of the waves or the size of the fish! We aspire to achieving so much with our lives, and ticking off so many wonderful experiences as Laurie did from his bucket list. Love to you all, and especially Jill. Rest in peace dear Laurie. Cathy & Lou
To the Cleland family My deepest sympathy to you all on the passing of Laurie. You will have many happy shared experiences and memories over a long period of time, and I hope that these and the thoughts and good wishes of many friends will be of some comfort to you all at this sad time. My sincere condolences to you all. John Hunter
Sending all our love to you Aunty Jill and family. Was a beautiful service and he will definitely be missed. Moe mai rā Uncle Laurie. Wade, Ana & Cullen Smith xx
Bit of a legend, could do anything and would do in his own style, loved an adventure with a twist, and did it all. thoughts are with the family and his fellow friends of Don and Bryan.
Our very heartfelt condolences to the Cleland family, especially our dear friend Jill. Laurie was a much loved shipmate and companion traveller over many years and through many adventures. David really appreciated the many sailing trips they achieved together - both in the Pacific and Mediterranean. Musn't forget snow skiing with him too. He was a great leader and teacher if I (David) could keep up!! We will miss your cheerful outlook on life. A joke we always enjoyed with you was "Beam Me Up Scotty" - swimming and hearing aids weren't a good mix! Rest in peace Laurie, you will be sorely missed. Sail well into a beautiful sunset. Much love always, David & Elizabeth
Dear Jill, Andy, Bart and Stace. My deepest sympathy on the death of Laurie. He had such a full, colourful and successful life. I have so many fond memories of Laurie. One I wanted to share. We were at Merrilands Domain and somehow kids had taken my bike and dropped it in very deep water and they were not able to retrieve it. Laurie was there and once he saw I was in distress, he came down and took charge and made sure my beloved bike was retrieved . I have never forgotten for what he did for me that day. Laurie was an important piece in the jigsaw that represents our fantastic Merrilands upbringing. Love to the Cleland Clan Pete Buxton Auckland NZ
Dear Jill and Family, I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of Laurie. Our memories go back to the bach at Whitianga and many happy weekends spent skiing at Lake Ratapiko. There was always much laughter when Laurie was around. He certainly made the most of his life. RIP Laurie, remembered with love. Julie Owen (nee Dawrant)
Laurie, what wonderful times we have had with you & Jill exploring parts of the world. Some memorable trips were sailing the Aegean Sea & testing the local wines in Greece & Turkey. Exploring Peru & trying to decide which are the most spectacular falls in the world. The heart stopping drive over the Sun Highway in the Glacier National Park which spans the border between Canada & America, these are memoriable trips with you and Jill. Thanks Laurie for all the good times we have had over the many years. We will miss your amazing positivity and enjoyment of life. Rest well our friend. Francie & Gordon

We fondly remember our time together with you and Laurie in Wengen & Florence, and of course on our lovely Mt Taranaki, and the many fun social evens after a great day skiing. I would like to pass on my very sincere condolences to Jill and her family... it was a very sad day when Laurie died and it seems very much like an ending of an era. Laurie was a very special and unique individual, generous with his time and knowledge to everyone who came in his orbit. He taught me to appreciate timber of all types and often had me out in the machine shop standing at the end of the four sider admiring the colour, grain and smell of the timber coming off the end of the machine....... He most certainly lived the moment, and laughed as hard as any of us at the many unlikely situations he found himself in... that nice new car and the electric car seat, and somehow Laurie found himself sitting in that seat squashed up tight against the steering wheel unable to free himself..... falling off the sheds he was building at work (it was pretty much a rite of passage for every shed), towing cherrypickers far to heavy for his little car, chainsawing through our main power cable at work..... and so it went on. He was a big personality with a kind and generous heart. There is a saying by George S Patton and it ends by saying........ we should thank god that such men lived. I hope Jill, that you and your family find comfort in that thought. Lois
To Jill and all your Family. We remember Laurie fondly as a fun up on the skifield. Herb is grateful for the help given during his time working in Egmont National. We are sad to hear he has left you. Our sympathy is with you. Sue & Herb Spannagl
