'The man, the myth, the legend'

Heartfelt thanks to ALL for your love, support, sympathy, for the small things, big things and everyhing you did for us both and for always keeping it real. Merv wanted to especially thank his hospice nurses and Eagars Funerals for their care and kindness.

Thank you to the many who attended or watched online Merv's perfectly fitting farewell. So many tributes, messages and kind words spoken about Merv (his head would be swelling, hopefully it didn't get stuck going through those pearly gates).

Everyone in your life will have a last day with you - and you don't even know when it will be.

'My Mervy' loved forever - Never forgotten.

MARY XXX

Passed away Saturday 5 July 2025, aged 72.

Dearly loved "My Mervy" of Mary.

Proud Dad to Michelle, and Matt.  Much loved Poppa of Koby and Emerson.

Son of Don and Laura Julian, brother to Rowan and Eileen, Mark, Warren and Pam, Donna and Chris Pilbrow.

Friend to the Julian Clan, the Lawlor family and good mate to many.

Reunited with a lot of "Good Bastards". Here for a good time, not a long time.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Merv's life at Eagars Te Henui Chapel, 46 Watson Street, New Plymouth on Thursday 10 July 2025 at 2pm, followed by a private cremation.

Merv's service will be live streamed here on his tribute page.

My Mervy, my soulmate.

The end came too fast.  I needed more time to memorise your face and more time listening to the sound of your laugh.  I needed a thousand more tomorrows and a thousand more "I love yous".

I needed more time.

Mary x

Thanks for being a great mate, we will always remember you and your cheeky grin. Love you long time. Denise.

Owh Merv Sorry to hear this sad news. I hadn’t seen Merv for a while. But no matter what pub I was in he would always yell out ‘Hey Flange’ (rather loudly) ‘You still drinking that gin? He’s the bugger that started that nickname! Had many a good night watching Merv race at Stratford. All over NZ actually. He was the sober driver for the Vamp Netball Team end of season annual round the mountain pub crawl. We all loved him. Condolences to all his family and friends. I’m going to watch livestream and have a G&T to farewell a true Inglewood legend. But I get the feeling it will be a gin and tissues. RIP Merv x

Rest easy Merv ❤️ It's warmed my heart reading the comments from others about what a fun, no nonsense, cheeky, treasured friend you are to so many. Although we only got to spend a few years together, I have some wonderful memories of you. Thank you for being gentle and patient with me when I wasn't an easy teenager. Although I told you that I hated being called 'Stephy', you didn't give a shit and made it my name from you anyway. It's something that I've never forgotten and I always did remember it fondly. I appreciate the time and love you shared with me. Mary, Michelle and your families - I'm thinking of you all xxx

Stephanie Dwyer (Scott)

Mervy- How do you sum up nearly 50 years in each other's lives. You have played a massive part in the Pierce families lives - you taught us to swear to party hard, race hard, and everything in between. It's been a privilege to spend so much time with you since your diagnosis - a shitty roller coaster to share, but I'm so pleased we got to do it with you and Mary , love you longtime - Frankie and BJ will love having you up there - M ❤️ M forever

The photo sums him up perfectly and little did he know he was here for a good time - not a long time. Many years of race talk, shit talk, piss talk and alot of amazing memories with this man who definitely brought alot of fun and laughter to our world. You were a legend in our eyes - a fierce competitor on the track - you didnt get nicknamed numbnuts for nothing! We are all going to miss you dearly especially the advice and mentoring for Bronson in recent years. No doubt he will "get his foot up it" just for you! That No.7 will soon make you proud and that cheeky little grin will be smirking above us for years to come. Love you long time my friend. XXXX

Vicki and Murray Pierce

Merv you gave Mary so much joy and Love, you lightened up her world. You truly were a “good bastard” and will be missed. I love how you said it how it was and I enjoyed your infectious laugh. You always had a smile on your face, even the last time I saw you. You will be missed deeply, rest well.

Kate Garner

Merv you and your family were neighbours to us at Egmont Village. As kids we played a few pranks but it was all good clean fun. Merv you had an infectious laugh and you always seemed to get in the shit for something you did but you knew how to push the boundaries to what depth you were in. It’s been great catching up with you and Mary over the last few months and being there to support you to the end of your journey. Have a beer with Brian and give him a hug from me. Going to miss you mate
