Brother Danny. Your passing has left a big hole in our hearts. You meant soo much, to soo many Danny. Our condolences to your beautiful lady in Bernie your rock and family From the first time I met you, I knew you were special Brother. God keep you safe until we are together again amigo.
Dear Bernie and family. My deepest sympathy to you all much love xoxo.
I first met Danny when I was posted to 4 Mdm Bty in 1969 on return from Vietnam. He taught me to drive the Matador gun tractor which was a beast. He had a quirksense of humor which stayed with him to the end. As was usual in our small army, we kept bumping into each other over the years until we both wound up at the Waikato Artillery Museum. Danny had a natural gift of story telling when taking visitors through the museum. We are going to miss him. We can't be at the funeral but we will be in touch. Love and hugs to Bernie and family.. To me, Danny wasn’t just my mate’s dad — he was an awesome man & one of the funniest people I’d ever met, hands down. When I was a wayward teen in the early 90s, he looked out for me when I was visiting like one of his own. Always cracking jokes, always making me laugh. I’ll never forget him in the Hong Kong Takeaways when we went to get dinner, asking how many cats were in the wontons or if the sweet and sour was caught with the electric drill on the bench. Classic Danny — just so funny!! Even though it’s been a few years since we caught up at the Mobil Diesel Tanks while filling up, I thought of him often with a smile. Rest Easy Danny & sending heartfelt condolences to his family x
Bernie and family. You won't know me however Danny was an important figure in my life during territorial army training. I was drafted in for 14 weeks of compulsory military training May through August 1964. Danny was our live-in NCO in the "Korea" barracks in Waiouru at that stage. Danny had a great sense of humour and got along with us young gunners by being one of boys - and he did lead us by example - a rare characteristic in the Waiouru NCOs in those days. I recall one day I had a tooth pulled out and that night suffered a bad bleed that covered half my bed. When Danny checked me first thing the next morning, he (and me) got such a fright he yelled "shit get the ambulance" - he even accompanied me to the army hospital! I was then transferred to 4th med battery in Ngaruawahia for 4 years of territorial duties, where of course Danny was one of the NCOs. We got on well together and I can recall one day he drove my MGB convertible sportscar round and round in howling smoking circles inside a gun storage bay! Only other time I saw Danny is when he called into our store in Whakatane. Rest in peace Danny - you were one of the good buggers!
Always a happy word, self-deprecating and funny and a bloody good soldier in spite of exasperating bs. He had a huge talent for korero, spinning a yarn, in such a way that even if you weren't sure his facts were perfect it didn't matter, entertainment ruled! When he chose to, he could be quite serious about matters close to his heart and he demonstrated strong knowledge of his whakapapa and of both New Zealand and world history. Thankyou for your contribution to our world Danny and letting you know that your photo on this site is of one very handsome b....r!!!!! Thankyou also to Bernie for being our friend, our deepest sympathy to you, we hope that all the happy, sad and happy memories of Danny will sustain you in the years ahead.
