To Christine and all Des's family Des was a valued member of the extended Spiers family. He and my father Brian were particularly close and kept in contact over the years - as I look at a photo of the Spiers cousins (children of Bill, Mont and Bert), Des and Brian were the only two boys in the clan, so they needed to stick together! They always enjoyed the time they spent together. With my husband and son involved in cycling, Des kindly gave to them a book on the Tour de France centenary after a visit to Nelson - Des has signed his name inside the cover. It sits on our book shelf and is a nice memory of Des and his kindness - he was such a gentleman. With Brian and Miriam now gone, Des leaves a gap however we have wonderful memories and strong family connections.
